Several SEGA Soundtracks Seemingly Sliced from Spotify

May 15th, 2018

Some unfortunate news for the musically inclined – several SEGA OSTs that were previously available for streaming on Spotify have suddenly vanished from the service.

SEGA doesn’t appear to have mentioned the removals on any social media accounts or statements, making the removals rather mysterious. It’s a pretty sizeable set of removals too; the affected soundtracks include:

  • Alex Kidd
  • Alexandria Bloodshow
  • Chain Chronicle
  • Fantasy Zone
  • Galaxy Force II/Thunder Blade
  • NiGHTS into dreams
  • Out Run
  • Power Drift
  • Rhythm Thief
  • Samurai Bloodshow
  • Skies Of Arcadia
  • Space Harrier Complete Collection
  • Super Hang-On
  • Virtua Fighter 1 – 5
  • WORLD CLUB Champion Football

It’s very unfortunate to see, particularly with SEGA PR previously stating they were looking into adding newer SEGA soundtracks to the service. Interestingly however, some of the titles appear to have changed into Japanese characters – suggesting perhaps the albums have been restricted to Japan.

We’ll let you know if the removals are reversed, or should a statement crop up. In the mean time, it’s back to the CDs for us.

[With thanks to @CorBond for compiling the list of removed tracks, as well as further investigating the extent of the removals]

Sonic Mania Plus Gets a New Trailer and Screenshots, Launches July 17th

April 25th, 2018

UPDATE (16:30) – Screenshots from SEGA Press have now been added.

Original Post:

A new trailer for Sonic Mania’s upcoming Plus edition has been released, giving us our first look at new characters Mighty and Ray in action – as well as a July 17th release date.

The trailer also shows some new animation in the style of previous trailers, as well as a glimpse at the game’s new “Encore Mode”. At a glance, this appears to rework the colour schemes of the levels; it’s not yet clear if it does anything else, though previews from Famitsu have indicated there may be more to the mode – including what appears to be Angel Island becoming playable. The trailer theme is a remix of the previous pre-order trailer song, “Time Trials” by Hyper Potions, though now with a helping of guitar from none other than Jun Senoue!

Sonic Mania Plus will launch physically on July 17th for PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. For owners of the original (and the PC version), a paid DLC update will be available.

Shining Resonance Refrain Releases July 10th in the West, New Trailer Released

April 24th, 2018

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming Western release of Shining Resonance Refrain, introducing the game’s heroes.

In addition, the game now has a firm release date, and there’s not long to go. The game launches in both the Americas and Europe on July 10th, for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. As a reminder, the game is a remake of the original Japan-exclusive Shining Resonance, with the presentation touched up and all of the original game’s DLC included; and localised into English, of course.

All launch run copies also include a steelbook case, dubbed the Draconic Launch Edition.

THUNDERBOX Reveals New Sonic the Hedgehog Fashion Range

April 24th, 2018

After previously teasing a collaboration with the franchise, Japanese streetwear brand THUNDERBOX has now revealed its new range of Sonic the Hedgehog apparel.

You can catch a full gallery of the range below. It’s somewhat reminiscent of the fantastic DropDead x Sonic range we got here in the UK, and we’re definitely down for that Eggman shirt. However as we mentioned in our last article, sadly THUNDERBOX do not offer worldwide shipping from their site. If you’ve got a friend in Japan, now’s the time to call in a favour.

Yakuza, Virtua Fighter and Sonic costumes Announced for Persona 3 Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5 Dancing Star Night

April 15th, 2018

Collaboration costumes for the upcoming Persona Dancing games have been announced at SEGA Fes – turns out the recent poll on the matter was a red herring, as all the listed series are getting represented!

Persona 3 Dancing will receive costumes based on Virtua Fighter, whereas Persona 5 Dancing will receive costumes based on Yakuza. The latter is with the exception of Morgana, Persona 5’s adorable kitty mascot; he’ll be getting a Sonic outfit, because of course! These costumes will be DLC – there’s currently no release date.

There’s still no word on a Western release for these titles – let’s hope we hear something soon!

Valkyria Chronicles 4 for Nintendo Switch Delayed to Fall – But Valkyria Chronicles 1 is Now Coming to Switch Too

April 15th, 2018

As of the Valkyria Chronicles 4 panel at SEGA Fes, SEGA has unfortunately announced that the game’s Switch edition has been delayed to the Fall.

However, it’s not all bad! Presumably as some show of apology, SEGA has announced the original Valkyria Chronicles is now coming to Switch. Those who pre-order Valkyria Chronicles 4 on the Nintendo eShop can get the original game for only 540 yen in the Fall, which isn’t a bad deal! Valkyria Chronicles 1 will be Digital only on Switch.

Currently all this information is true of Japan, but we’ll let you know if SEGA’s Western branches comment on it.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Gain Ground Join SEGA AGES for Switch Line-Up

April 15th, 2018

Two additional games have been announced for the upcoming SEGA AGES releases for Nintendo Switch – Alex Kidd in Miracle World, and Gain Ground.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World is the second Master System title to be announced, while Gain Ground marks the first arcade game announcement for the series.

Currently, all is known is that they’ll be part of the collection, with no details divulged as far as extra features. However, we’d be surprised if Gain Ground didn’t take advantage of the Switch’s potential for Tate Mode!

It’s also been revealed that Sonic 1 will include the Mega Play arcade version, and that Phantasy Star will inherit its features from the PS2 AGES Collection release.

The games will start being released in Summer, with a simultaneous worldwide release planned.

SEGA Mega Drive Mini to Release in Japan, Powered by AtGames

April 14th, 2018

UPDATE 20:00

AtGames have now confirmed their involvement, in a tweet.

UPDATE 16:32
It appears that the SEGA Mega Drive Mini maybe different in design to the AtGames Genesis Flashback. The unit itself is much smaller that the Genesis Flashback making backwards compatibility with actual Mega Drive cartridges impossible. Could this in fact be a newly developed system by SEGA Japan? We will update this article when we learn more.

ORIGINAL POST
SEGA Japan have announced the SEGA Mega Drive Mini for Japanese release.

It is currently unclear if this is a re-release of AtGames’s SEGA Genesis Flashback HD console for the Japanese market. SEGA Games COO Kenji Matsubara had previously expressed interest in importing and selling the SEGA Genesis Flashback in Japan.

Details on the exact specifications of the SEGA Mega Drive Mini are sparse at this time, but if it is a slightly altered version of the AtGames unit, it will likely feature the same line-up of Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear and original titles from the Genesis Flashback. It will also include backwards compatibility with existing Mega Drive games via its cartridge port, as well as HDMI out for modern televisions.

The SEGA Mega Drive Mini will launch in Japan later in 2018.

New Sakura Wars Game Announced for Japan

April 14th, 2018

A brand new Sakura Wars game has been announced for Japan. The tactical role-playing series hasn’t had a new entry since 2005’s Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love.

This new title is promised to be set in the imperial city of Tokyo in the Taisho era during 1929. No further details like release dates or what platforms the game will appear on have been revealed at this time.
