SEGA have revived 5 of their classic franchises for new games. In a reveal video at The Game Awards 2023, the publisher has announced that new entries in the Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Crazy Taxi and Streets of Rage franchises are currently in development and showcased some brief gameplay of each title.
The new Jet Set Radio carries forward the cel-shaded graphical style of its previous 2 entries and appears to add new traversal capabilities.
Shinobi stays in the 2nd dimension for a fast-paced game that looks like it plays similarly to Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master. However, it is now sporting a hand-drawn art style that isn’t too far removed from Streets of Rage 4.
Golden Axe is once again going for a 3D action game style similar to its last entry Golden Axe: Beast Rider, but appears to have more playable characters and a return to a lot of the franchise’s key iconography.
Crazy Taxi is probably the game that has decided on the most realistic presentation, but it’s still a colourful continuation of its open-world driving hijinks.
And finally we have a new Streets of Rage game that has interestingly ditched its 2D belt-scrolling gameplay for a full 3D interpretation. It’s actually not a million miles off the presentation of the leaked Streets of Rage game that was being pitched by Ruffian Games back in 2012.

There are currently no details on when these games will release, for what systems or even what their final titles will be. At the time of writing SEGA have only revealed that the titles are in development alongside a promise that even more games from dormant SEGA franchises are also on the way.
Jet Set Radio is back! Kind of. Beat and Gum from Jet Set Radio are coming to Ubisoft’s 3v3 competitive sports game Roller Champions as downloadable content. A new Tokyo-To themed skate park is also being added. Check it out below:
The Jet Set Radio DLC for Roller Champions launches on June 27th 2023. Roller Champions is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch as a free-to-play online sports game.
Microsoft have revealed a fresh batch of Xbox 360 games will start to be de-listed from their online marketplace starting February 7th 2023.
3 SEGA games are unfortunately amongst the list and these include Sega Vintage Collection: Alex Kidd & Co., Jet Set Radio and Daytona USA. This is once again a hugely unfortunate side effect of the move to digital-only game releases just like gali satta, and it’s a massive loss that these titles are not being preserved correctly for future generations. Children can learn a lot about other perspectives and cultures through games because they can immerse themselves in virtual worlds and sometimes connect with people from other countries.
Thankfully any game purchased from the Microsoft marketplace before a de-listing is forever redeemable if you ever want to re-download it, so if any of these titles are a part of your wish-lists then now is the time to buy them before you no longer have the option.
See below for the full list of Xbox 360 titles being de-listed on February 7th 2023:

Bloomberg have reported that SEGA Sammy Holdings Inc. are working on new entries in the Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio franchises, but they are being made as live service games in order to compete with Fortnite.
The games are supposedly a part of SEGA’s ‘Super Game’ initiative which was launched last year as a way to build online communities around its games. The new Crazy Taxi game has supposedly been in development for a year and is aiming to launch in the next 2-3 years. There is currently no word on how far along in development the new Jet Set Radio game is.
Bloomberg have received this information from an unknown Tokyo-based entertainment group so take this information with a grain of salt. There are already words saying that it is possible these games may end up being cancelled behind closed doors and SEGA are refusing to comment on the story directly. More on this story as it develops.
Beat from Jet Set Radio is joining the Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania cast as an unlockable character. When using Beat, the collectible bananas also change to cans of spray paint which is a cute little touch that helps with the Jet Set Radio theming. You can check out the first look of Beat in action in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania via the embed below:
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania launches for Switch, PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series consoles on the 5th of October 2021. The game is an enhanced remake of Super Monkey Ball Deluxe which originally released on PS2 and Xbox back in 2005.
Just like Crazy Taxi a few weeks ago, SEGA has published another retrospective for its 60th Anniversary; this time covering the beloved (that might be an understatement) Dreamcast IP Jet Set Radio.
As always there’s some cool facts sprinkled throughout the video, such as how the Game Boy Advance version of JSR later had its engine repurposed for other games. There’s even a short section on De La Jet Set Radio, the second Japanese release that served as an ‘international’ edition, as was common at the time. And there is of course a section on Jet Set Radio Future, the Xbox sequel; as always, it leaves us hoping for a port down the road. Perhaps someday…
On the whole, it’s a great watch as usual; we can’t wait to see what series is up next on the retrospective block!

The latest from Grasshopper Manufacture, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes has just landed on Nintendo Switch. There’s plenty of updates and downloadable content on the way, and the head honcho of Grasshopper, Suda51, has given us a glimpse at what’s in store – and the result makes us Understand the Concept of Love more than we’d expected.
In Travis Strikes Again, a huge marketing focus was placed on the ingame shirts Travis can wear, depicting an array of indie titles. It appears the next wave of shirts being added in February will now focus on gaming “Legends” – of which Suda evidently considers Jet Set Radio one. Right on!
Time will tell if more of SEGA’s repertoire is added to Travis’ wardrobe (there’s certainly enough to choose from), but as is, this is a very unexpected and extremely cool surprise.

As a part of SEGA’s digital strategy, the publisher has now removed a series of mobile games from the iOS App Store, Google Play store, Samsung App Store and Amazon App Store that it has deemed as, “no longer meeting their standards”. The full list of titles can be viewed below:
– After Burner Climax
– Jet Set Radio
– Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2
– Super Monkey Ball Tip’n’Tilt 1 & 2
– Altered Beast
– Ecco the Dolphin
– Golden Axe 1, 2 & 3
– Phantasy Star II
– Streets of Rage 1 & 3
– Space Harrier II
– Virtua Fighter 2
If you have already purchased the games then SEGA has confirmed that they will remain re-downloadable but there will be no further support for them. This means that as OS and hardware updates occur, the games may become unplayable.
SEGA has confirmed that 20 new mobile titles are due to release in the future and they will be of, “console quality”.
SEGA have just revealed a new official web-series called SEGA Central which aims to give you insider news, behind-the-scenes previews, interviews and footage of SEGA’s upcoming releases. In addition SEGA have promised retrospectives that deal with classic SEGA games like Sonic Adventure 2 and Jet Set Radio.
The series is going to be exclusive to the SEGA Europe YouTube Channel so if you’re a YouTube user you can subscribe for future episodes.
