If there’s one SEGA console that gets a rough reception in the West, it’s the SEGA Saturn. But it was certainly a unique specimen – which is why a newly dumped sampler disc demonstrating its numerous graphical features comes as an interesting look into the hardware’s capabilities.
The disc demonstrates rotation effects, how sprites could used in a way similar to clipping masks, and there’s even a short shoot-em up game to play (as well as plenty of Fantasy Zone sprites). Sonic fans may also notice just how many graphical techniques the recent Sonic Mania lifted from the original hardware in the name of authenticity! But that’s not all that’s here for Sonic fans – as there’s several unique pieces of artwork on the disc too, used as part of graphical effect tests.
Since the effects can make the artwork somewhat hard to see, we’ve ripped them from the demo for your viewing pleasure below.
It’s always cool to see development software come to light, and makes for a great way of getting insight into how our favourite games worked. The Saturn, underrated as it is, is no exception.
When Tracker isn’t playing SEGA games, he’s talking about SEGA games. Or drawing about SEGA games. Or all of the above. You can also catch him over on Twitter.
Brave Wave Productions (who previously released the Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 soundtracks on vinyl) are back with a new SEGA soundtrack release in the form of SEGA Saturn rarity, Panzer Dragoon Saga. Jon Burton from Traveller’s Tales and his fascinating GameHut YouTube channel is at it again with a fascinating look at the earliest known prototype of Sonic R. The track featured in this prototype wouldn’t make it into the final game and there’s a lot of artwork and assets on show that have never been seen before. You can see the prototype in action by clicking the embed below:
We visited the Centre for Computing History in Cambridge and had a look at all their SEGA stuff! The centre is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am ’til 5pm. Adult entry is £8.
Tilt! (or Hyper 3D Pinball depending on where you’re from) is quite an extensive package for a 1996 pinball sim. Developed by NMS Software, this game features a whopping 6 unique tables to choose from, 2 camera angles and additional cut-scenes when you lock a ball in play. There’s a hell of a lot of pinball packed onto this disc, but is it all worth your time?
Pinball is high score gaming in its purest form; smack a chrome ball around a table and watch the numbers go up. There’s obviously a little more to it than that, but pinball offers a great feedback loop as you hit targets, bumpers and ramps and the machine blasts noise and light at you to indicate you’re doing well. It’s a visceral and exciting experience that will cost you an arm and a leg if you ever wanted to buy your own table and maintain it, so thankfully pinball simulation games came to the rescue to allow us all to enjoy the thrill of pinball from our homes.
