Steve Lycett Answers Fan Questions on Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Steve Lycett, executive producer at Sumo Digital as been very busy answering a lot of fan-proposed questions at the Sonic Stadium Message Board. We’ve also learnt some new things about the game from his answers:

– The game uses a new engine called the Sumo Engine which allows for dynamic lighting
– The vehicle transforms into either a plane or a boat for water and flying sections. This script-driven and cannot be done manually
– All the new tracks are completely original and are not variations on a theme (like all the various Seaside Hill stages in the original game)
– Online play hasn’t been confirmed for PC but HEAVILY hinted at
– Sumo are attempting to impliment all-star moves for online play
– Sumo have approached SEGA in regards to releasing a soundtrack for the game
– The game will run at 30fps
– There will be a much wider array of powerups
– The 3DS version will not be running the Sumo Engine and will be built from the group up. Sumo are aiming to make this version as close to the other versions as possible
– Sumo are trying to impliment dynamically changing music which changes depending on what is happening in the race
– The ‘first place attack weapon’ drops items in the way of the person in first position which they then have to avoid. It doesn’t attack them head on with no means of defence (think the infamous Mario Kart blue shell)

Greater Focus on Fan Interaction at Summer of Sonic 2012

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

This year’s Summer of Sonic convention will be focussing greater on fan interaction after the announcement of several features which will be appearing at the July 7th event.

First of all, the Showcase feature makes a return. This means fans can get on stage to display their various talents, whether it be fan art, music, fiction or anything else! The Artist Alley also returns which will showcase artwork from a range of different contributors. Fan animations and shorts are also expected to be shown throughout the day.

Also returning is the annual cosplay contest which has seen an ever-growing popularity each year. I’ve personally seen plenty of Shadows, Sonics, Rouges, Sallys and even a Wes Weasley at past events!

The Club Sonic segment will also make a return after its’ successful appearance last year. This section of the show relies heavily on audience participation to a nonstop megamix of Sonic tunes.

Finally, Sonic the Comic Online will be appearing at the event to showcase the latest work on the online continuation of Fleetway’s Sonic the Comic series.

More information on the newly announced sequel to Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is slowly seeping in.

The game will feature a total of 27 playable characters. The characters will be unlocked in a single player adventure/story mode which is also new to the series. Characters can also earn XP and level up which allows the characters to use their all-star moves.

Sumo Digital’s development team has been expanded to include members of past racing studios such as Gareth Wilson from Bizarre Creations as well as members of Black Rock.

There will also be new weapons like a small, remote controlled Sonic vehicle (complete with transformations) which can be remotely driven into enemies and detonated like a bomb. Also announced is a giant catchers mitt which can be used to catch enemy projectiles and use them to your advantage.

Fan Scene: Sonic 2 HD Kicks the Bucket

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

Sonic 2 HD, the promising HD fan remake of Sonic 2 has been officially cancelled as per a message left by Vincent (the project leader) on the project’s official Facebook. Reasons for this are mainly pinned on ex-lead developer LOst who wouldn’t provide the rest of the team with a DRM free version of the game and is solely responsible for the inclusion of the DirectInput bug which made users believe they’d downloaded a keylogger. He is also the only person holding what would be the source code for the game so production cannot continue without his involvement.

DRAMA.

Never-the-less, it’s sad to see the project go as the alpha demo was an impressive piece of work by what is essentially a bunch of bedroom coders. 2 members of the team (scanline99 and Cerulean Nights) have moved on to other independent work in hopes of furthering their game-developing careers and we wish them all the best for the future.

Get a Bonus ‘Adult Map’ When You Pre-Order Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz in Japan

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

In what is possibly the most bizarre in-game bonus we’ve ever seen, SEGA has revealed an ‘adult map’ for Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz on PS Vita.

The map is based around Yuki Kawamura; a Japanese glamour model which obviously means you can use her breasts as ramps. Yes, you read that right. See below for the hard evidence (no pun intended):

This map is only available to those who pre-order the first print run of the game in Japan and will unlikely be making an appearance on Western shores.

Here’s an additional trailer that also features Yuki Kawamura promoting the game:

Binary Domain Coming to PC

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

Binary Domain will be getting a PC release very soon. Digital copies will launch on April 27th while boxed copies will launch on May 18th.

Pre-order from Steam and you’ll also receive the Multiplayer Pack which includes a Ninja class , Outside High-rise map and extra sniper rifle and handgun weapon types. This will set you back £30.

Hopefully the game gets a second wind with this PC release as the console release failed to set the world alight even though it received positive reviews from most major game-sites.
