SEGADriven is a SEGA news and information source that focuses on SEGA's console history, retro games and new software hitting the shelves. We want to share a love of great, quirky, clever and down-right fun games - something that SEGA have always specialised in. See below for the latest news, reviews and features added to the website.
The above images come from a cancelled Initial D game for the DS called Initial D EX. The game was in development at SEGA Rosso in 2007/2008 but was quietly cancelled for unknown reasons. The above images actually come directly from SEGA Rosso’s website but were removed rather sharpish. Initial D EX was planned to be the 7th game in the Initial D franchise.
As a part of SEGA’s digital strategy, the publisher has now removed a series of mobile games from the iOS App Store, Google Play store, Samsung App Store and Amazon App Store that it has deemed as, “no longer meeting their standards”. The full list of titles can be viewed below:
– After Burner Climax
– Jet Set Radio
– Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2
– Super Monkey Ball Tip’n’Tilt 1 & 2
– Altered Beast
– Ecco the Dolphin
– Golden Axe 1, 2 & 3
– Phantasy Star II
– Streets of Rage 1 & 3
– Space Harrier II
– Virtua Fighter 2
If you have already purchased the games then SEGA has confirmed that they will remain re-downloadable but there will be no further support for them. This means that as OS and hardware updates occur, the games may become unplayable.
SEGA has confirmed that 20 new mobile titles are due to release in the future and they will be of, “console quality”.
The first character artwork and screenshot of Axel Stone in Project X Zone 2 has been revealed and they’re pretty faithful to the original character design. You can check them both out below:
This is Axel Stone’s first in-game appearance since Streets of Rage 3 in 1994. Axel will be voiced by Tomokazu Sugita. Project X Zone 2 releases worldwide on 3DS this Autumn.
Hatsune Miku Project Mirai DX is fast approaching (it releases on May 29th) and there’s now a massive 12 and a half minute trailer to sink your teeth into. Check it out below:
There is also news of some of the new features in Project Mirai DX which includes an option to build your own custom playlists and the option to spend play coins on in-game items like helper and challenge items. The previously revealed Puyo Puyo mini-game (which can be played against CPU and friends via local connectivity) is also joined by a Reversi mini-game.
Well this is an odd one: following the disappearance of Imageepoch’s CEO Ryoei Mikage last month, the company have now filed for bankruptcy. The bankruptcy is apparently unrelated to Mikage’s disappearance and is blamed on a fall in company’s profits due to a sales slump. This was made worse by the rising cost of development.
There is no mention as to what will happen to the release of Imageepoch’s upcoming game Stella Glow which SEGA Japan are due to publish in June. I’d hazard a guess that unless the game had already gone gold, Stella Glow is likely cancelled.
SEGADriven wish everyone affected by this news all the best in finding work. We also hope that Mikage is found safe in due course.
Some new characters have been revealed for Project X Zone 2, the crossover strategy RPG from Bandai Namco, Capcom and SEGA.
New to the series is Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Aty from Summon Night 3 and Nana Kazuki and Ciel Alencon from God Eater 2.
The news that will excite SEGA fans is the inclusion of Axel Stone from Streets of Rage. This marks the character’s first new appearance in a video game since Streets of Rage 3 in 1994. Axel joins Gemini Sunrise and Sakura Shinguji from Sakura Wars as the currently confirmed SEGA characters for Project X Zone 2.
Legendary RPG Grandia II is set for a HD PC release via GungHo Online Entertainment America. The game was originally released on the Dreamcast back in 2000 and has been re-birthed thanks to an “enthusiastic” response to a consumer survey that the publisher carried out earlier this year.
No release date has been set but the game is due to launch on the Steam platform.
Hucast return for another entry in their DUX series with the reveal of Redux 2 for Dreamcast. Redux 2 will follow in its forbears’ footsteps by being a horizontal scrolling shoot-em-up in the vein of R-Type. It has been revealed that the game will feature 2 player co-op.
No release date has been revealed at this time. You can read our review of the first Redux by clicking here.
