SEGA seemingly tease Puyo Puyo Tetris for Steam

February 5th, 2018

Several not-very-cryptic pieces of ASCII art have been posted to the Steam pages of BayonettaVanquish, and Valkyria Chronicles, hinting that a PC port of crossover puzzler Puyo Puyo Tetris is inbound. It’s very in-line with previous PC port teasers (Vanquish was first hinted at in Bayonetta PC’s files, for instance), and the timing seems about right given yesterday was actually “Puyo Puyo Day”.

Considering Puyo Tetris is now available on a staggering number of platforms, it makes sense to push into PC territory; it’ll also be the first official Puyo release on PC since 2004’s Puyo Pop Fever. It’s nice to see SEGA Europe continue to deliver on their promise of PC ports, at any rate!

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life delayed to April 17th, Demo Announced

February 2nd, 2018

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life has been delayed in The Americas and Europe to April 17th, from its original release date of March 20th.

The delay was revealed in a tweet from the official Yakuza Twitter account, but there was some good news with the bad too – on February 27th, the game will be getting a PSN demo. Progress made in the demo will also be carried over to the full game, giving a great incentive to those who are already dead-set on buying the game regardless.

Delays are always a bit of a shame, but if it results in a better product at the end, there’s no qualms here – and SEGA have promised to fill the void with some fresh Yakuza content in the meantime, too. Roll on April 17th!

Official SEGA Forums to Close February 2nd

February 1st, 2018

SEGA Social Media coordinator Aaron Webber has taken to the company’s official forums to announce they’ll be shut down tomorrow, February 2nd 2018.

In the post, Webber notes the sudden nature of the closure – but reassures users that there are plans for a new SEGA Forum site in the future, and that this is merely the end of the vBulletin iteration. The SEGA Forums have been active on vBulletin for around 8 years, and the intention seems to be that the posts made in that time could be migrated to a new host. Whether that will play out remains to be seen however, and Webber also makes clear that future plans for the forums aren’t set in stone yet.

It’s certainly a bit of a surprise, though it could perhaps be argued the SEGA Forums lost some significance over the years with the rise of Twitter and other social media platforms, as well as competing forums like the Sonic Stadium Message Boards. Go back a few years though, and the SEGA Forums were actually quite active during the development of games such as Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. It’d be quite sad to see all of that history being potentially lost; all the more reason to hope the migration plans pan out in the long run.

Yuji Naka, Creator of Sonic the Hedgehog Joins Square Enix

January 22nd, 2018

Yuji Naka, the former head of Sonic Team and famed lead programmer on the original Sonic the Hedgehog game for Mega Drive has joined Square Enix’s game development staff. Naka’s own announcement reveals that he aims “to develop an enjoyable game” but there is currently no word on what project Naka will be working on.

Naka had previously left SEGA in 2006 to found his own games studio called Prope. It is currently unknown if Prope will continue to develop games without Naka. The studio’s social media pages haven’t updated since June 2017 so it could be the case that Prope have also closed their doors, however we have no solid information at this time.

First Look at House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn in Action | Video Spotlight

January 21st, 2018

The lovely people over at ThrowBack Tokyo have recorded some extensive off-screen footage of House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn in action at the recent location test in Akihabara. As the footage shows, it’s very much the House of the Dead sequel we’ve all been waiting for, complete with campy voice acting and over-the-top, zombie-shooting action. Like The House of Dead 4, the violence has been toned down somewhat, with the zombies now burning away when they’re dispatched. However, the amount of on-screen zombies has been drastically increased. Click the embed below to see for yourself:
