SEGA Forever Releases Exhaustive Golden Axe Retrospective | Video Spotlight

Saturday, November 28th, 2020

The next SEGA Forever retrospective video is here, and this time it’s Golden Axe’s moment in the spotlight.

The video offers an extensive look at the history of the series, from the original beat-em ups to the one-on-one fighting game, and even the RPG spinoffs; the latter, I didn’t realise actually existed! Even as someone who’s not the biggest fan of the original Golden Axe, the video has made me want to check out some of the side-ventures I’d missed.

Fair warning: at around the 1:30 mark there’s an extremely harsh strobe pattern that would’ve worked fine on the Game Gear but is a bit eye-melting on a 1080p screen. If you’ve got epilepsy you might want to sit this one out.

The unreleased SEGA Pluto is the stuff of legend. Only 2 exist in the wild and they are essentially prototype SEGA Saturns with built-in Netlink capabilities. This system was never released to the public. If you’d like to learn more about the system then please read our hardware article on the system which features images of both surviving Plutos.

One of the systems has now ended up on the desk of Ben Heck, famous for repairing the prototype Nintendo Playstation. His work on the system is minimal, but this tear-down video does offer some fascinating insight into the machine that Saturn fans should absolutely watch. Check it out below:

New Sonic Design Debuts in Brand New Sonic Movie Trailer | Video Spotlight

Tuesday, November 12th, 2019

After the negative reception of Sonic’s look in the first trailer for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie, Paramount Pictures have gone back to the drawing board, delayed the film until February 2020 and given the visual effects team some extra time to redesign the character. We now have our first look at Sonic’s redesigned with this brand new trailer. Check it out below:

While the design still looks quite similar to the original, with Sonic having 2 separated eyes and lots of finer spines on his back, he definitely looks more like his game model with an overall cuter look and the addition of gloves instead of white fur on his hands. His shoes are also more comparable to those of the games as well.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie will now launch on February 14th 2020. Ben Schwartz voices Sonic with James Marsden playing his police officer friend Tom and Jim Carrey taking the role of Dr. Robotnik.
