Alongside the reveal of the new animated short film, a whole host of additional content has been revealed. The blu-ray and digital release of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie will feature deleted scenes, bloopers, behind-the-scenes content and some additional featurettes called Rapid Fire Responses, Robotnik Reimagined, Finding Your Team, A Sibling For Sonic: Tails and The Powerful Puncher: Knuckles.

With the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, Jeff Fowler and company managed to establish this cinematic version of the character in a more realistic scenario. It certainly contained a fair bit of Sonic franchise iconography, but it was a film that was considerably more grounded and may have left Sonic fans a little wanting. With the foundations now laid, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 fully leans into the more extravagant concepts of the games it is based on and delivers one of the best video game-to-movie adaptations there has ever been.

That’s certainly a lot of Sonic franchise references! We’ve got Tails, we’ve got the Tornado, we’ve got the master emerald, we’ve got buzzbombers and we’ve even got Knuckles. Idris Elba will voice Knuckles as the new antagonist of the movie alongside Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 launches in cinemas worldwide on April 8th 2022. Jeff Fowler returns to direct.
In a recent tweet, Idris Elba appears to have revealed that he will be voicing Knuckles the Echidna in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie.
Elba’s tweet simply reads “Knock, knock….” and is accompanied with a render of Knuckles’ glove, presumably from the character model being used for the movie.
The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie arrives in theaters on April 8th 2022 for North America. The film is once again being directed by Jeff Fowler and Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey will also return as Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Robotnik respectively. The original film from 2020 was one of the top earners of the year grossing $319.7 million worldwide.
Off the back of its box office success earlier this year, the voice of Sonic himself has confirmed the release date for the sequel to the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which will now arrive on the 8th of April 2022.
The sequel was first revealed back in May, with confirmation that director Jeff Fowler is returning, with Pat Casey and Josh Miller also returning to write the script. Ben Schwartz effectively confirms his return as the voice of Sonic with this announcement. Jim Carrey has previously expressed his interest about returning as Dr. Robotnik but we have no official confirmation at this time.
The original Sonic the Hedgehog movie released back in February 2020 and is currently the 2nd highest grossing film of 2020 and the highest grossing video game adaptation of all time in North America.
Jeff Fowler, the Director of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie from Paramount, has taken to Twitter to announce that the film has been pushed back from its November/December 2019 release date. The film will now launch on February 14th 2020, with Fowler citing the previously confirmed redesign of Sonic as the cause.
For those who’ve been under a rock, the trailer for the Sonic movie debuted to widespread horror at Sonic’s design, leading Fowler to almost immediately state they’d change it. This then led to concerns that the VFX artists would be hit by major crunch trying to fix things for the 2019 release window.
As such, the film’s now been delayed. It’s a welcome move honestly – now we go back to awaiting out next look at Sonic with bated breath.
