Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Planned for Release on November 15th 2019, Jeff Fowler to Direct

Wednesday, February 21st, 2018

The Hollywood Reporter have provided a fresh batch of details from Paramount regarding the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie – perhaps most notably, the release date.

The film is currently slated for November 15th 2019. The crew attached to the project includes Neil Moritz as producer, with Tim Miller of Deadpool fame in an executive producer role. In addition, Toby Ascher will also executive produce, whilst Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons serve as co-producers.

In terms of the director’s chair, it falls to Jeff Fowler – Sonic will be his directorial debut. In the past, Fowler produced Gopher Broke, an Oscar nominated short film – so perhaps the film’s in good hands after all?

Currently there’s no information on current writers or how the film is going to take shape – it can be assumed it’s changed significantly since Sony held the project, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the intended mix of live action and CGI. There’s no information on whether Marza Animation Planet are still on board either – it may well end up that Miller decides to use his own studio, particularly since Blur Studios have actually worked on Sonic games in the past.

All eyes are now on SXSW in March – could that be our first glimpse at the film?

Sonic Makes Guest Appearance in Pac-Man Mobile Game

Tuesday, February 20th, 2018

Bandai Namco’s Pac-Man mobile will feature a special maze that’s themed around Sonic the Hedgehog. The maze is clearly inspired by Green Hill Zone with Sonic taking the place of Pac-Man and Motobugs taking the place of the ghosts. Click the embed below to see Sonic in action in the classic arcade maze game:

The Pac-Man mobile game is free-to-play on iOS and Android devices but also includes in-app purchases. This Sonic maze is currently not available in the latest update of the iOS game, so we can only assume it is coming in a future update. Go to LevelUp casino and play casino games while waiting for the updates.

UPDATE 21/2/2018
The update to the iOS version of the Pac-Man app is now live and includes the Sonic-themed mazes for free.

Diamond Select Toys reveal new Sonic the Hedgehog figures, including statues and Minimates

Sunday, February 18th, 2018

A video from ToyChestNews has given us our first glimpse of Diamond Select Toys’ new range of Sonic the Hedgehog figures, including statues of Sonic and Tails and a wide-ranging assortment of “Minimates” figures. Articles on Mamonlineshop offer some ideas for choosing toys that will grow with your child, challenge her, and nurture her thinking, physical, language, and social-emotional skills.

Currently, there’s only concrete details on the Minimates – they’ll retail for $24.99 as a boxset, including Sonic, Tails, Amy, Dr Eggman, Cream & Cheese, and Super Sonic. One thing that isn’t 100% clear is whether this information is geared towards retailers though. The statues of Sonic and Tails on show are apparently due to debut at Gamestop stores, and are currently pending approval.

We’ll keep an eye out for any future developments on Diamond’s new Sonic range, particularly concerning pricing for those rather lovely statues – so stay tuned. Full size images are available by clicking through below.

Shinobi 7 launch Sonic: Battle Racers board game on Kickstarter

Thursday, February 8th, 2018

Tabletop game company Shinobi 7 has launched a Kickstarter project for a new Sonic the Hedgehog board game, Sonic the Hedgehog: Battle Racers.

A full overview of the game itself is provided by the Kickstarter page, but the gist of it seems to be a tabletop translation of the ring-collecting, badnik-bopping antics that Sonic’s known for. There’s also a slew of benefits for people who pledge certain amounts to the campaign, such as exclusive Badnik figures and a Super Sonic player piece; as well as Stretch Goals aplenty.

The minimum pledge, which gets you the game and the Super Sonic figure, will set you back around £36. That being said, the campaign mentions extra shipping costs for rewards.

Yuji Naka, Creator of Sonic the Hedgehog Joins Square Enix

Monday, January 22nd, 2018

Yuji Naka, the former head of Sonic Team and famed lead programmer on the original Sonic the Hedgehog game for Mega Drive has joined Square Enix’s game development staff. Naka’s own announcement reveals that he aims “to develop an enjoyable game” but there is currently no word on what project Naka will be working on.

Naka had previously left SEGA in 2006 to found his own games studio called Prope. It is currently unknown if Prope will continue to develop games without Naka. The studio’s social media pages haven’t updated since June 2017 so it could be the case that Prope have also closed their doors, however we have no solid information at this time.
