The kings of prototype game preservation Hidden Palace have returned with another massive update of unreleased and prototype game dumps. Among the extensive update are a few unreleased SEGA titles with the most interesting being a 32X port of Spot Goes to Hollywood – the isometric sequel to Cool Spot. In addition to the 32X Spot Goes to Hollywood discovery, we also have an interesting Time Warner 32X CMD Download Cartridge dump – a piece of software used to download programs onto a flash cart for testing on real 32X hardware.
On the Mega Drive side of things we have a dump of RBI Baseball 95 which was eventually cancelled. We also have a prototype version of Race Drivin’ that would see release on the system in March 1993. This prototype appears to be quite late in the game’s development.
A brand new Mega-CD solution in the form of an FPGA-powered flash cart has appeared and it is called the MegaSD. Developed by Terraonion, this new flash cart is powerful enough to emulate actual Mega-CD hardware and plugs directly into a Mega Drive. It can even run 32X/Mega-CD titles if you have access to a 32X as well.
The MegaSD doesn’t just support variants of Mega-CD games as well. The flash cart will run Mega-CD ISOs, Mega Drive ROMs, Master System ROMs and 32X ROMs (but only with the 32X add-on). The MegaSD is widely compatible with actual Mega Drives, the Mega SG and the SEGA Nomad and also supports up to 8 save state slots. It can even emulate the FM sound unit for compatible Master System games.
A recently discovered 1995 prototype of Pinocchio for the 32X has been discovered. Dumped by Radar and released by drx, this 32X version of the game features a wider colour palette and some additional layers of parallax scrolling backgrounds. The unreleased 32X game Virtua Hamster could now be yours thanks to eBay seller “gametimevault” who are selling a prototype cartridge. Bidding is currently at $108.49 so if you’re serious about owning an extremely rare piece of SEGA history then you better be prepared to shell out some serious dough.
