Bloomberg have reported that SEGA Sammy Holdings Inc. are working on new entries in the Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio franchises, but they are being made as live service games in order to compete with Fortnite.
The games are supposedly a part of SEGA’s ‘Super Game’ initiative which was launched last year as a way to build online communities around its games. The new Crazy Taxi game has supposedly been in development for a year and is aiming to launch in the next 2-3 years. There is currently no word on how far along in development the new Jet Set Radio game is.
Bloomberg have received this information from an unknown Tokyo-based entertainment group so take this information with a grain of salt. There are already words saying that it is possible these games may end up being cancelled behind closed doors and SEGA are refusing to comment on the story directly. More on this story as it develops.
This one doesn’t have any ground-breaking discoveries from SEGA’s archives, but it does serve as a pretty great way to familiarise yourself with the mainline entries in SEGA’s beloved cab-em-up series. It also provides a good excuse to listen to “All I Want”, though to be fair we never need an ‘excuse’ to listen to that song.
SEGA Forever’s also promised there’s more Retrospectives on the way as part of a series, so we’ll let you know when more go up.
When Tracker isn’t playing SEGA games, he’s talking about SEGA games. Or drawing about SEGA games. Or all of the above. You can also catch him over on Twitter.
SEGA’s new Crazy Taxi mobile title, Crazy Taxi Gazillionaire, is out now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
The Demiurge-developed title is a “clicker” game where you control a fleet of taxis in an attempt to make as much money as possible. Do you think the Crazy Taxi license is a good fit for this type of game? Let us know in the comments below.
In the meantime, why not watch the launch trailer?
In addition to this new title, the iOS and Android port of the original Crazy Taxi has now been updated to be free-to-play so if you’ve been tempted to try it, now you can except with ads in the menu transitions.
A new Crazy Taxi game has been announced for iOS and Android devices. The new game is called Crazy Taxi: City Rush and it’s being developed by SEGA’s mobile developer Hardlight Studio. Check out the announcement trailer below and the first screenshot above:
Crazy Taxi us now available to download on iOS devices, but what’s more interesting is that the original Bad Religion/The Offspring soundtrack is now back in the game! The original soundtrack was previously missing from recent releases on XBLA/PSN/Steam as well as the PSP re-release Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars.
The game is currently priced at £2.99 on the UK app store. Now SEGA have reacquired the rights for the original soundtrack perhaps they can release a patch for the XBLA/PSN versions so we can all enjoy it? Here’s hoping!
A recent teaser trailer from SEGA is promising a re-release of Crazy Taxi for iOS. What’s interesting about the trailer is that it hints the original Offspring/Bad Religion soundtrack might be back. Take a look below:
Have SEGA finally managed to get the rights back for the original Crazy Taxi soundtrack? Only time will tell. The trailer mentions an October 2012 release so we shouldn’t be waiting too long!
