Fresh off the back of the recent artwork leak and ratings from South Korea, SEGA have officially dropped the first trailer for Sonic Origins and revealed a whole host of information for the upcoming retro Sonic compilation.
Sonic Origins will feature the Taxman versions of Sonic 1, CD and 2 alongside a brand new port of Sonic 3 & Knuckles developed by Headcannon who previously assisted with the Taxman ports as well as Sonic Mania. The games can be played in their remastered anniversary editions in full widescreen, or in their classic 4:3 aspect ratio versions. The game will also feature a mission mode which tasks players with completing new custom stages that earn them tokens to be spent on in-game unlockables in the game’s virtual museum.
The games will also be available to play as one big title that combines all four titles. The games will also feature new animated opening and ending sequences from SEGA in collaboration with Powerhouse Animation.
Sadly the game is currently a digital only release. What’s more confusing is the 5 different editions the game is being sold in; each with their own exclusive content like a mirror mode, hard missions, additional character animations and additional music tracks. You can see the breakdown of each edition in the graphic below. Thankfully there is only a £4 difference between the base game and the ‘digital deluxe edition’, with the base game priced at £32.99 and the digital deluxe edition priced at £36.98.
Sonic Origins will release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch on June 23rd 2022.
It’s been very quiet on the Sonic Origins front. We haven’t heard anything since the game’s initial reveal back in May 2021, but something is definitely happening soon because the game has been rated in South Korea and some key art has been leaked via the back door of the PlayStation Network. You can see the key art in the header for this this article.
Sonic Origins is a new collection of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic the Hedgehog CD. Sonic 3 & Knuckles will also be available to play in their full combined glory, and it has been promised that all games will be displayed in a widescreen resolution. This has led many to believe these ports are being based on Christian Whitehead’s mobile versions of Sonic 1, 2 and CD.
Sonic Origins is scheduled to release at some point in 2022 for “the latest platforms“. Here’s hoping more news on Sonic Origins is coming soon!
Gamefam Studios have released a new Sonic the Hedgehog fan game within Roblox called Sonic Speed Simulator. The fan game is officially endorsed by SEGA, marking their first fan game endorsement since Big’s Big Fishing Adventure 3 in 2016.
Sonic Speed Simulator offers players the opportunity to race in multiple, large, 3D environments against other players. You can also unlock new worlds, collect chao and earn new skins to customise your character with.
Sonic Speed Simulator is currently in beta and can only be played via paid access within Roblox. The game will move to a free-to-play model when the game comes out of beta. With the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, Jeff Fowler and company managed to establish this cinematic version of the character in a more realistic scenario. It certainly contained a fair bit of Sonic franchise iconography, but it was a film that was considerably more grounded and may have left Sonic fans a little wanting. With the foundations now laid, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 fully leans into the more extravagant concepts of the games it is based on and delivers one of the best video game-to-movie adaptations there has ever been.
The final trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie is upon us! Click the embed below to see Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik in action alongside returning characters Tom Wachowski and Agent Stone:
Alongside the new trailer is a brand new movie poster that hearkens back to the cover artwork of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Mega Drive game. You can see the new poster at the top of this article.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 releases worldwide on April 8th 2022. Jim Carrey reprises his role as Dr. Robotnik alongside Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog, Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower. Jeff Fowler also returns to direct.
We also have a couple of new Clothing additions. These come in the form of a Sonic the Hedgehog necktie sold in the UK in the early 1990s and a SEGA World baseball cap that was originally sold via the London SEGA World venue’s gift shop. Click here to view the Clothing section.
SEGA has announced a collaboration with virtual marathon company Medal Dash; they’ll be putting on a Sonic-themed ‘virtual run’.
The idea is simple: run or walk 5K, 10K or 13.1 miles by the end of 2022, and you’ll get Sonic merch. That said, this is a paid event with limited slots, so it’s not just freebies. Sign-ups start at $34.95, and the swag on offer includes a die-cast medal, a running bib and some shirts.
It’s certainly a fitting way to leverage the Sonic brand, even if our aging brains can’t quite wrap our head around the entire ‘virtual run’ concept. The website does mention participants across the world, so it would seem this is open to UK residents too.
When Tracker isn’t playing SEGA games, he’s talking about SEGA games. Or drawing about SEGA games. Or all of the above. You can also catch him over on Twitter.
The Sonic Hacking Contest will return for the week starting October 10th 2022. The annual Sonic the Hedgehog modding contest is now accepting submissions until September 4th 2022 and September 25th for expo entries.
Expo entries are not judged so if your project is earlier in its development cycle and you’d like to give a wider audience an opportunity to experience your early work for feedback then this is the category for you. Contest entries will receive criticism from the panel of judges and also be eligible to win trophies, of which there are a handful of new ones for 2022’s contest.
A full list of information about contest categories, trophies judging and how to submit a hack or mod to this year’s Sonic Hacking Contest can be found on the contest’s official website. The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie isn’t even out yet, but Paramount Pictures are obviously very happy with the performance of the first Sonic movie because they’ve just revealed that a 3rd Sonic movie is now in development alongside a Knuckles spin-off TV series that will air in 2023 on Paramount Plus. Idris Elba is also set to return to voice our favourite echidna in this upcoming TV series.
The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was a huge success for Paramount, grossing $319.7 million against a budget of $90 million. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 releases on April 8th 2022 and sees the return of Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog and introduces Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower.
