Croc: Legend of the Gobbos Saturn Video Review | YouTube Channel

Wednesday, May 25th, 2022

The SEGA Saturn is not particularly well known for its 3D platform games, so we’ve decided to see what platformers were available for the system. We start our journey with a look at the Saturn port of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos by Argonaut Software. A special thanks has to be given to Mark Hughes for the game capture used in this video which was taken from real hardware. Check it out via the embed below:

Unreleased Game Gear Puzzle Game ‘BreakThru!’ Now Dumped

Saturday, August 28th, 2021

The good people over at SMS Power have managed to secure the loose EPROMs of an unreleased Game Gear title called BreakThru! and have now dumped the game and preserved it digitally.

BreakThru! was originally released on other systems such as PC, SNES, Game Boy in 1994 and Saturn and Playstation later in 1995. The game is infamous for being endorsed by Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov. This Game Gear version was completed but never released for unknown reasons.

You can download the ROM file from SMS Power’s page on the title. SMS Power have also released a patched version that is more compatible with different hardware. The ROM file can be played on real hardware using something like an Everdrive cartridge. Alternatively the game can be played under emulation.

SEGA Forever Release Sonic R Anniversary Artwork by Sonic the Comic’s Richard Elson

Wednesday, November 18th, 2020

Sonic R released on this day back in 1997 over the pond, and to commemorate it, SEGA Forever have pulled off something very special – a brand new piece of artwork based on the game, from Sonic the Comic’s Richard Elson!

It’s a beautiful tribute; no surprise, as Elson’s stuff is always gorgeous. The art has a sort-of blend of his own Sonic the Comic style and the more style-guide accurate Classic Sonic art, to make something really special! It’s lovely to see something for the Sonic the Comic fans in audience, and hopefully this acknowledgment could lead to more down the road, as we’d be very much down for reprints!

SEGA Forever Release NiGHTS into dreams… Anniversary Video, Reveals Previously Unseen Prototype Boxart

Sunday, August 23rd, 2020

SEGA Forever have published a new video to celebrate the 24th Anniversary of the beloved SEGA Saturn title NiGHTS into dreams…‘s launch in North America.

As well as being a great watch for those looking to learn more about NiGHTS, it has a nice bit of fanservice for those who already love the game to pieces – a glimpse at an unused take on the game’s US boxart, seen at the 1:39 mark!

The scrapped design is certainly an… interesting take on NiGHTS, but we can’t say it getting the axe is something to lament too much. All the same, it’s fantastic to see new discoveries and material unearthed from the depths of SEGA, and even better than this is from an official platform.

For those unaware, SEGA Forever recently transitioned away from being SEGA’s retro mobile brand, and now focuses on the preservation of SEGA’s classic material. As an example of this, the Twitter account has been regularly posting high-resolution assets and renders from old titles, just in case you ever needed the Gain Ground packaging artwork in 4K resolution.

Monday, March 23rd, 2020

The unreleased SEGA Pluto is the stuff of legend. Only 2 exist in the wild and they are essentially prototype SEGA Saturns with built-in Netlink capabilities. This system was never released to the public. If you’d like to learn more about the system then please read our hardware article on the system which features images of both surviving Plutos.

One of the systems has now ended up on the desk of Ben Heck, famous for repairing the prototype Nintendo Playstation. His work on the system is minimal, but this tear-down video does offer some fascinating insight into the machine that Saturn fans should absolutely watch. Check it out below:
