SEGA Catcher Online Comes to the US on December 3rd 2019

Thursday, November 28th, 2019

SEGA’s UFO catchers are a staple of the Japanese arcade. This crane game allows players to win exclusive licensed merchandise from a huge range of properties. While similar games have existed in Western arcades for quite some time, the quality of merchandise is often lower quality to what SEGA offer in their UFO catchers.

SEGA Japan also run an online service where people can play on UFO catchers from their computers and still win physical prizes that are then delivered to your home. This service is going to be expanded outside Japan for the first time ever when it comes to the US on December 3rd 2019.

SEGA Catcher Online can be accessed via this link, but the US site won’t go live until December 3rd. Probably best to bookmark it and come back on December 3rd if you’re interested in winning some exclusive goodies produced by SEGA Japan’s SEGA Toys division.

SEGA AGES: Fantasy Zone for Nintendo Switch Launches November 28th in Japan

Monday, November 25th, 2019

Sound the SEGA AGES klaxon – because Fantasy Zone will be joining SEGA’s lineup of Nintendo Switch re-releases this week, in Japan at least.

Previously announced to be the next game in the lineup, we now know the game will launch this Thursday, November 28th (thanks to timezones, that’ll be Wednesday afternoon in the UK). It’ll be the usual price of 999 JPY. The release includes the content of the 3DS port, such as the Upa-Upa mode, as well as new elements like a Time Attack mode and revamped HUD display similar to M2’s own ShotTriggers releases.  More information is available on the Japanese page for SEGA AGES.

There’s currently no word on a Western release date for SEGA AGES Shinobi or Fantasy Zone, but we imagine it can’t be too far off now – we’ll report if one shows up.

Sonic 3 Prototype from November 1993 Dumped by Hidden Palace, Features Different Music & Sprites

Monday, November 18th, 2019

For the final week of Hidden Palace’s Sonic month, the prototype archivists have released something very special. The team have dumped a November 1993 prototype of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 which features different music and sprites which are based on those from Sonic 2.

This prototype comes from a time when Sonic 3 was supposed to contain all the stages from Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, and while Sonic 3’s stages are mostly complete, the Sonic & Knuckles stages are often incomplete, showcasing an early insight into that game’s development. Screenshots from this prototype made their way into the Sonic 3: Exclusive Story of the Year! preview supplement which we also have archived in our merchandise section.

The real discovery comes with the game’s soundtrack. Sonic fans will know that the PC version of Sonic 3 features different tunes for Ice Cap, Launch Base and Carnival Night Zone. Well it appears that these tunes actually pre-date the versions that were eventually included in the final release of Sonic 3, as they make an appearance in this prototype. This is the first time anyone has heard these tunes powered by the Mega Drive’s YM2612 sound chip and it makes for some truly fascinating listening.

Check out a playthrough of the prototype ROM below. You can download the ROM to play yourself via this link to the game’s entry at Hidden Palace.

Sonic X Coming to US Netflix December 1st 2019

Monday, November 18th, 2019

Seasons 1 and 2 of the Sonic X anime are heading to the North American version of Netflix on December 1st 2019. This means the first 52 episodes of the show that ran from 2003 to 2005 will be available for viewing.

If you’re unfamiliar with Sonic X then you’ll be unfamiliar with its plot where Sonic and his friends are accidentally transported to Earth. It’s very similar in scope to the upcoming film from Paramount Pictures, except that Sonic befriends a child named Chris Thorndyke instead of a police officer.

There is currently no word on when/if the remaining 26 episodes of season 3 will be hitting the platform. It is also worth mentioning that there is currently no definitive word on which regions outside North America will receive Sonic X. Spain, Mexico and Argentina are also confirmed. Thanks to Ash the Dragon for the news tip.
