Yuzo Koshiro Working on New Mega Drive Shoot-Em-Up

Wednesday, November 30th, 2022

Yuzo Koshiro has revealed that he is working on a new Mega Drive game with an unnamed designer who he previously collaborated with on Beyond Oasis/The Story of Thor.

While development is seemingly early, Koshiro has shared 2 screenshots of the game which appears to be a horizontally-scrolling shoot-em-up.

There is currently no word on when the game will release or whether it will get a physical release. Koshiro has previously worked on physical Mega Drive games that have been published by Columbus Circle, like 16 Bit Rhythm Land which released back in early 2019.

Koshiro has mentioned that the primary release will be for Mega Drive but that other platforms could follow.

SEGA are teaming up with Lizardcube (developers of the recent Wonderboy: The Dragon’s Trap remake), Guard Crush Games and Dotemu to bring Streets of Rage 4 to reality. Check out the trailer below to see the first footage of this game’s lovely, hand-drawn animation in motion:

Well doesn’t that look fantastic? Sadly this trailer is all we have to go on at the moment. It will also be interesting to see if Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima return to score the soundtrack, but that is also unconfirmed at this time.

Nintendo Everything are currently speculating that a Nintendo Switch release is in the works as both Lizardcube and Dotemu are famous for their work on releases for this system.

Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima to Tour Streets of Rage Music with Red Bull Music Academy

Friday, September 29th, 2017

If you’ve never seen it, go and watch Red Bull Music Academy’s fascinating documentary series Diggin’ in the Carts. It interviews loads of Japanese video game composers from its earliest days and right up to the PS1 era. While lots of different composers from many different publishing houses feature, Yuzo Koshiro of Streets of Rage and Revenge of Shinobi fame features in one episode and many contemporary artists heap praise on his revolutionary dance-influenced music.

Despite the fact the series is now 3 years old, Red Bull Music Academy are reviving the Diggin’ in the Carts name for a world tour featuring composers that appeared in the original series. Yuzo Koshiro and fellow Streets of Rage composer Motohiro Kawashima are due to appear at 3 live shows that will also feature many other composers from the series. The dates for these shows are listed below:

– October 22nd 2017, Regent Theater, Los Angeles, USA
– November 17th 2017, Liquidroom, Tokyo, Japan
– November 30th 2017, Fabric, London, UK

Tickets aren’t available just yet but as this information becomes available we will be sure to keep you updated.

Review: Streets of Rage for Master System

Sunday, January 29th, 2017

sorsms01 001

There’s something fascinating about seeing a much more advanced title being ported to a significantly underpowered system. In the right hands, these kind of ports can be an exciting experiment. What will the developer sacrifice in order to make the game run on such archaic hardware? More often than not, it’s the in-house studios who achieve the better results and with the Master System version of Streets of Rage that is definitely the case.
