Game Gear RetroN 5 Adapter Due for Release Later This Year

Sunday, July 5th, 2015

retron5

The unofficial hybrid retro machine known as the RetroN 5 will get a system expansion thanks to a new adapter that allows it to play Game Gear games.

Hyperkin’s product manager Paul Leung confirmed that work on the Game Gear adapter is already underway and it is due for release by the end of the year. No exact release date or pricing has been revealed at this time.

The system already allows you to play NES, Famicom, SNES, Mega Drive, Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games out the box. Master System games can also be played with the assistance of a Power Base Converter. While the machine is powered by console emulation instead of the actual guts of the systems it supports, it actually offers some of the best emulation available on these hybrid machines and offers 720p output as well as a save state feature.

Centiment to Tour in November With Multiplayer Mega Drive Gaming at Every Show

Tuesday, October 7th, 2014

We’ve spoken about Centiment in the past because the British metallers have quite the penchant for old SEGA games. Their debut album Streets of Rage released earlier this year and features the songs Defenders of Oasis, Bloodshot and Zero Tolerance.

Now the band embark on a UK tour in December in support of their new EP, Retro. Creatively titled The Retro Gamer Tour, the band are setting up multiplayer Mega Drive action at the merch desk of every show on the tour.

If heavy music with a retro gaming twist is up your street then you might want to catch Centiment on one of these upcoming UK tour dates:

1/12 – Think Tank, Newcastle
2/12 – Audio, Glasgow
3/12 – Fibbers, York
4/12 – The Compass, Chester
5/12 – Alfie Birds, Birmingham

Centiment feature 3 of the 4 members of British rockers InMe. You can stream and buy their album Streets of Rage by clicking this link.

Unreleased Master System/Game Gear Versions of Lemmings 2 The Tribes Dumped

Saturday, May 17th, 2014

Unreleased versions of Lemmings 2: The Tribes have been released by SMS Power. The Master System and Game Gear versions of the game were completed and even sent to SEGA Power Magazine for review in 1994 but were cancelled due to the dwindling sales of SEGA’s 8 bit consoles and the high cost of cartridge production at the time.

You can get the ROM dumps for both versions of the game by registering at SMS Power. You will need an emulator to play the ROMs. Click the below links to be taken to the entries on SEGA Power:

SEGA Tunes: Marble Madness Remix Album

Tuesday, March 11th, 2014

First things first; yes, Marble Madness is an Atari arcade game and not a SEGA game per se, but we at SEGADriven regard any game published for a SEGA first party console fair game for feature on the website. As Marble Madness was released for Master System, Game Gear and Mega Drive it’s entirely relevant to us.

Now that’s out of the way, allow me to present ‘Where Good Marbles Go to Die’; a Marble Madness remix album courtesy of Stemage. The hard rock/heavy metal remix album tackles the entire Marble Madness soundtrack and features guest appearances from Disasterpeace, Lauren Liebowitz of Descendants of Erdrick, norg, XOC, Kirby Pufocia, housethegrate and VikingGuitar.

You can stream the entire thing using the below widget or alternatively download it at a pay-what-you-want price-point. Sadly the limited edition cassette version of the album is now sold out but at least it’s available digitally, right?

SEGA Tunes: Banjo Cover of the Monster Village Theme from Wonder Boy III

Sunday, March 2nd, 2014

It’s not often someone sends you a message saying “here’s a video I made featuring a cover of the Monster Village theme from Wonder Boy III. Also it’s been done on a banjo.” Well that’s exactly what happened to me recently and the video was supplied by a certain Ollie LongZ; a talented little musician who has recently taken to arranging banjo covers of video game themes. Check out the impressive little arrangement below:

Here’s hoping Ollie has more SEGA covers up his sleeve, but if you’re interested you can check out another of Ollie’s cover’s by clicking here (it’s a Castlevania one).

SEGA Tunes: Jungle Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog (8 Bit)

Tuesday, February 18th, 2014

It’s been a while since we took a look back at some classic SEGA anthems and I thought it was worth featuring the below track simply because it’s been stuck in my head all morning!

Today we are taking a look at the rather lovely 8 bit ditty that is the theme to Jungle Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog for Master System and Gamer Gear. The track was composed by Yuzo Koshiro who is more famously recognised for his thumping, dance style and the Streets of Rage soundtracks.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 8 bit soundtrack showcases Yuzo Koshiro in a lighter, more poppier mood yet still manages to be a highly memorable collection of songs. Hopefully you will all be whistling the Jungle Zone theme once you’re done with this!
