SEGA Japan have revealed a new House of the Dead arcade title called House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn. This will be the first new House of the Dead title since The House of the Dead: Overkill in 2009 and the first Japanese-produced House of the Dead since The House of the Dead EX, also released in 2009.
Location tests start at the Akihabara Club SEGA arcade on the 19th of January 2018. There is currently no word on a Western release or a home console port at this time.
Almost 9 years after its initial release in arcades, AM2’s mech action game, Border Break is finally getting a home console port for the PS4.
Border Break first released for SEGA’s RingEdge arcade board in 2009 and despite receiving many reiterations, has stayed arcade exclusive until now. While there is no firm release date at the moment, SEGA Japan are promising a release at some point in 2018. There is currently no word on a wider release for US and European markets.

Intrepid Izzy is a new Dreamcast action platformer from Senile Team; famed creators of Rush Rush Rally Racing and Beats of Rage. The game is currently in development and is seeking funding via the Kickstarter platform. At the time of writing the game is 40% funded with 17 days to go. If you’re interested in supporting a new Dreamcast project then you can visit the game’s Kickstarter page and pledge now. The Dreamcast tier will set you back 30 euros which is a great price for a brand new, physical Dreamcast game. In conjuction with the Dreamcast release, the game will also be released on PC and PS4.
Jon Burton from Traveller’s Tales and his fascinating GameHut YouTube channel is at it again with a fascinating look at the earliest known prototype of Sonic R. The track featured in this prototype wouldn’t make it into the final game and there’s a lot of artwork and assets on show that have never been seen before. The Sonic Amateur Games Expo is back and the show is now live. The show is running until October 7th and there’s a whole host of fan games to download on best lyncconf gaming monitors and play including Sonic 2 HD, Sonic Project Twisted, Sonic the Hedgehog 06 PC, Sonic World, and much more.

If you’ve never seen it, go and watch Red Bull Music Academy’s fascinating documentary series Diggin’ in the Carts. It interviews loads of Japanese video game composers from its earliest days and right up to the PS1 era. While lots of different composers from many different publishing houses feature, Yuzo Koshiro of Streets of Rage and Revenge of Shinobi fame features in one episode and many contemporary artists heap praise on his revolutionary dance-influenced music.
Despite the fact the series is now 3 years old, Red Bull Music Academy are reviving the Diggin’ in the Carts name for a world tour featuring composers that appeared in the original series. Yuzo Koshiro and fellow Streets of Rage composer Motohiro Kawashima are due to appear at 3 live shows that will also feature many other composers from the series. The dates for these shows are listed below:
– October 22nd 2017, Regent Theater, Los Angeles, USA
– November 17th 2017, Liquidroom, Tokyo, Japan
– November 30th 2017, Fabric, London, UK

Cross-promotional advertising campaigns and Sonic the Hedgehog are not exactly the weirdest occurance in the world. We’ve had Sonic branded Happy Meal toys, Burger King toys, toothpaste, Williams F1 cars and Life Savers hard candies so SEGA have certainly proven they like to get the Blue Blur’s face onto anything. However, you’d like to have thought that SEGA’s family friendly mascot adheres to a certain set of standards. Surely we wouldn’t see Sonic’s face on any adult-orientated products? Oh boy. SEGA Japan have revealed a cross-promotional advertising campaigns with 3 branches of Hooters restaurants in Tokyo. If you’re not familiar with Hooters then it’s basically an American-style restaurant famous for hot wings and employing sexy waitresses with low-cut tops. The collaboration will extend to the Shibuya West, Ginza and Akasaka branches of the restaurant but it’s not exactly clear what products will actually come out of this collaboration at the moment. More is due to be revealed in the coming days and quite frankly, I’m worried.
Shadow the Hedgehog returns as a playable character in a Sonic game via a new, free DLC chapter that will be added to Sonic Forces on day one. Episode Shadow will include 3 exclusive stages for Shadow to explore and they will explore the character’s backstory and his connections to new villain, Infinite. Shadow will also be available to play in many of the game’s Modern Sonic stages as an added bonus. Check out the video below to see Shadow in action in Episode Shadow:
Sonic Forces and Episode Shadow launch worldwide on November 7th 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.
The mobile Virtua Tennis title Virtua Tennis Challenge is the next game to be given the SEGA Forever treatment. This now means the game is free to download and play with ads, with an optional one-off payment of £1.99 to remove the ads.
Virtua Tennis Challenge was originally released on the 13th of March 2012 and this update essentially brings it in line with other SEGA Forever titles i.e. a new yellow-bordered icon, the new SEGA Forever logo at start-up and ad support.
In a move that is probably going to bring The Ban Hammer down pretty strongly, a social media application developer called Narvii Inc. have released a Sonic the Hedgehog-themed social media app called Rings without any approval from SEGA themselves.
The app is available now on iOS and Android devices and is completely free, but it requires registration using either your email, mobile number of Facebook login. It’s pretty comprehensive and features support for things like your own profile, complete with a comments wall and gallery, chat rooms, quizzes and various feeds that allow you follow the latest Sonic news and much more.
Narvii Inc. have rolled out a lot of similar social media apps with a similarly niche focus. The iOS app store currently shows similar apps powered by Narvii Inc.’s Amino social media platform that are themed around wrestling, video games, K pop, anime and much more.
