New Mega Drive Title ‘Demons of Asteborg’ Seeking Kickstarter Funding

Wednesday, September 25th, 2019

It’s time for a new independent Mega Drive development! This time we have Demons of Asteborg; an action title from Neofid Technology based in Manosque, France.

Demons of Asteborg is a game very much in the Ghouls ‘n Ghosts/Volgarr the Viking mold. The game is due to be released on Steam, Nintendo Switch and most importantly, the SEGA Mega Drive in August 2020. However, it requires £30,892 of funding to be made a reality, and that’s where Kickstarter comes into play.

If this all sounds interesting to you, you can pledge towards the game’s development and receive the game for whatever format you desire as either a physical product or a digital download. There are many tiers to choose from to suit as many people as possible so click here to check out the Demons of Asteborg Kickstarter page and see what takes your fancy.

Disney to Re-Release Mega Drive Versions of Aladdin and The Lion King in New Budget Collection This October 29th

Wednesday, August 28th, 2019

UPDATE
In light of this announcement, Disney have removed the previously available Steam versions of The Lion King and Aladdin from sale. Their storefront pages are still on Steam, but the option to buy them is no longer there. Thanks to Saturn Memories for the tip.

ORIGINAL STORY
Disney and Digital Eclipse will re-release the Mega Drive versions of Aladdin and The Lion King in a new budget-release collection for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on October 29th 2019.

This new compilation also includes the Game Boy versions of the games alongside the SNES version of The Lion King. The SNES version of Aladdin isn’t included, likely due to a licensing issue. The SNES version of Aladdin is a completely different game when compared to its Mega Drive equivalent, and it was developed by Capcom.

The collection also boasts a 15 second rewind button, a previously unreleased “Final Cut” of Aladdin and the 1993 trade show version of Aladdin. Aladdin is famous for being the 3rd best selling Mega Drive game behind Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Terraonion Launches Pre-Orders for Mega-CD Clone Flash Cart ‘MegaSD’

Tuesday, June 18th, 2019

A brand new Mega-CD solution in the form of an FPGA-powered flash cart has appeared and it is called the MegaSD. Developed by Terraonion, this new flash cart is powerful enough to emulate actual Mega-CD hardware and plugs directly into a Mega Drive. It can even run 32X/Mega-CD titles if you have access to a 32X as well.

The MegaSD doesn’t just support variants of Mega-CD games as well. The flash cart will run Mega-CD ISOs, Mega Drive ROMs, Master System ROMs and 32X ROMs (but only with the 32X add-on). The MegaSD is widely compatible with actual Mega Drives, the Mega SG and the SEGA Nomad and also supports up to 8 save state slots. It can even emulate the FM sound unit for compatible Master System games.

Pre-orders are live on the official Terraonion shop now, and the cartridge is due to ship in August 2019. It retails for €232.00.

Box of STI Floppy Disks Contain Unreleased Mega Drive Game, Sonic 2 Development Documents and Other Rarities

Saturday, April 20th, 2019

A collection of floppy disks previously owned by SEGA Technical Institute employee Tom Payne has ended up in the hands of Jason Moorhouse, a California-based retro game shop owner. With the help of Frank Cifaldi of the Video Game History Foundation, Bob Morgan and Jessie Perez, these disks have been dumped and converted into a readable format and some incredible discoveries have been made.

The most interesting of the bunch is an unreleased Mega Drive game called Spinny & Spike vs the Nightmare King. The game is not in a playable state, but various art assets have been ripped and a selection of them are viewable here:

Also included are a huge selection of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 development documents. A lot of these documents are previously released concepts by Yasushi Yamaguchi, but there are some new discoveries in here and we’ve included a selection below.

If you want to read the full story on the origins of the box of floppies and exactly what is contained on each disk then click here to go to the Megabits blog and have a look around. There is some truly fascinating stuff here.
