A brand new Mega Drive & Mark III edition of Picross S for the Nintendo Switch has been revealed by the game’s developer Jupiter in a recent BitSummit video. This new version of the game features puzzles based on characters from various retro SEGA properties, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Alex Kidd, Phantasy Star and more.
The game will contain 4 modes: Picross, Mega Picross, Colour Picross and Clip Picross. The game is due to release worldwide this Autumn 2020 as a digital eShop title. You can watch the reveal trailer below:

ORIGINAL STORY Hidden Palace‘s Sonic Month continues with a fresh selection of unreleased Sonic prototypes. This time we have 3 different releases of Sonic Chaos for Master System and Game Gear and a separate Sonic the Hedgehog 2 release for Mega Drive.
The Sonic Chaos releases date from May, June and July 1993 with the May release being an early Game Gear prototype that features different character sprites from the final build. Download links for each of these releases are listed below:
For fans of either game, these prototypes reveal some fascinating insight into the games’ development and are well worth a look if you have any interest in either game.
Homebrew developers NoRecess and Condense are creating a brand new port of the 8 bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Amstrad GX-4000 called Sonic the Hedgehog GX. This port is based on the Game Gear version and features some really beautiful artwork:
A playable version isn’t publicly available at this time but the game’s website promises a release by the end of 2020. There are also videos of the game running under direct capture and off-screen on real hardware that you can watch by clicking here and here.
Bitmap Books’ Visual Compendium series are some of the most beautifully presented books about video games out there, and with their 6th entry in the series the team are focussing their sights on SEGA’s 8 bit powerhouse, the Master System. SEGA Master System: A Visual Compendium is a hefty, 432 page slab of nostalgia that highlights a strong portion of the Master System software library.
A brand new Mega-CD solution in the form of an FPGA-powered flash cart has appeared and it is called the MegaSD. Developed by Terraonion, this new flash cart is powerful enough to emulate actual Mega-CD hardware and plugs directly into a Mega Drive. It can even run 32X/Mega-CD titles if you have access to a 32X as well.
The MegaSD doesn’t just support variants of Mega-CD games as well. The flash cart will run Mega-CD ISOs, Mega Drive ROMs, Master System ROMs and 32X ROMs (but only with the 32X add-on). The MegaSD is widely compatible with actual Mega Drives, the Mega SG and the SEGA Nomad and also supports up to 8 save state slots. It can even emulate the FM sound unit for compatible Master System games.
