Original Ecco the Dolphin designer Ed Annunziata has revealed that remasters of the original Ecco game and its sequel The Tides of Time are currently in development. In addition to this news, Annunziata has also revealed a new entry in the series will be developed by the original Ecco team once work on the remasters has wrapped up.
It is currently unclear if Annunziata is working with SEGA to produce these new Ecco games, or whether Annunziata has purchased the Ecco license from SEGA.
The original Ecco the Dolphin was released on the Mega Drive in 1992 and developed by Novotrade. Ed Annunziata worked as the designer, while László Szenttornyai directed the game. The same team would also develop Ecco: The Tides of Time which originally released for Mega Drive in 1994. The last new Ecco game was Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, developed by Appaloosa Interactive and released for the Dreamcast in 2000.
The long awaited addition of the UK’s official SEGA comic has finally made its way into our Comics and Graphic Novels section of the Merchandise catalogue. 15 issues of Sonic the Comic have been added complete with cover scans and the stories contained within each issue. We also have some brief information on the publication as a whole as well.
An unreleased sequel to Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future called Ecco II: Sentinels of the Universe has been leaked online. A disc image of the unreleased Dreamcast title is available to download now and play on actual Dreamcast hardware.
The game is incomplete, features no sound and the debug menu is constantly active but it does present a curious oddity that suggests SEGA’s reboot of the Ecco the Dolphin franchise did well enough for the publisher to consider a sequel. Information also seems to suggest the game was cancelled around the time SEGA left the console business to become a third party software publisher, which would explain the game’s cancellation.

Ed Annunziata, project lead and creator of Ecco the Dolphin is seeking funding to create a spritual successor to the series called The Big Blue.
The Big Blue will allow you to take control of a variety of sea-life in a futuristic setting keeping with the theme of Ecco. Spencer Nilsen will return to provide the soundtrack with assistance from Bear McCreary who is responsible for the soundtracks to Walking Dead and Battlestar Galactica.
The team are asking for $665,000 and as a further stretch goal the team will add multiplayer and cooperative play if the project exceeds its’ target by 50%. If the project doubles its’ goal then the team are also planning to turn the game into an MMO for play on consoles, PCs and mobile gaming devices.
