SEGA Tunes: Jungle Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog (8 Bit)

Tuesday, February 18th, 2014

It’s been a while since we took a look back at some classic SEGA anthems and I thought it was worth featuring the below track simply because it’s been stuck in my head all morning!

Today we are taking a look at the rather lovely 8 bit ditty that is the theme to Jungle Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog for Master System and Gamer Gear. The track was composed by Yuzo Koshiro who is more famously recognised for his thumping, dance style and the Streets of Rage soundtracks.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 8 bit soundtrack showcases Yuzo Koshiro in a lighter, more poppier mood yet still manages to be a highly memorable collection of songs. Hopefully you will all be whistling the Jungle Zone theme once you’re done with this!

London Trocadero to Close This Month

Friday, February 14th, 2014

The London Trocadero which is home to one of the most popular arcade gaming spots in the UK, is closing its doors for good on February 25th.

Previously the home of SEGA World and later Fun Land, the venue has housed one of the biggest arcades in London and an important landmark for those who are interested in arcade gaming and don’t live near a seaside town.

The Heart of Gaming in North Acton obtained a selection of its arcade cabinets from the Trocadero last year which was telling of the degradation of the Trocadero which had slowly been shrinking in scale since its Fun Land days.

It’s sad to see London’s premier arcade go, but it certainly wasn’t in the best shape in recent years. RIP London Trocadero; we knew thee well.

You can see what the London Trocadero was like in its heyday by checking out this video report we made back in 2010:

The Japanese mixed pair figure skating duo of Cathy Reed and Chris Reed competed in the Ice Dancing event at the 2014 Winter Olympics to the tune of ‘Shogun II’ from the Total War: Shogun II soundtrack. There basically isn’t anything I can add to this! Just look at that picture!

Snatcher Devs Working on New Adventure Game

Tuesday, February 11th, 2014

Now here’s an interesting little development (even if it is only slightly related to SEGA)!

Key developers behind Mega-CD and Saturn game ‘Snatcher’ have joined forces to create a new Japanese adventure game called Blakemore. The game is set in a steampunk, alternate universe version of London.

The game is being directed by Jeremy Blaustein, the man responsible for the English-language version of Snatcher on Mega-CD (this has been the only time the game was ever available in English). Art is being handled by Satoshi Yoshioka who worked as the character designer on the original Snatcher and music is being handled by Motoaki Furukawa who did the soundtrack for the original Snatcher.

Snatcher is famous for being Hideo Kojima’s second ever game and features some small references to Metal Gear. Curiously, David Hayter is being brought on board for Blakemore (famous for voicing Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid) to voice one of the characters.

If you’re interested in helping the development of Blakemore you can back the game on Kickstarter. The game is due for release on PC and MAC in early 2015. Click here to go straight to the Kickstarter page.

Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax Round-Up

Monday, February 10th, 2014

There’s quite a bit of new information floating around regarding SEGA’s new arcade fighting game Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax.

While the game features a cast of characters from various anime and manga series’, SEGA fans will be interested in the Sonic the Hedgehog stage (see above). The graphics seem to be taken from Green Hill in Sonic Generations.

Also announced is that Akira from Virtua Fighter will appear as a boss character. Other character announcements include the inclusion of Kirito from Sword Art Online.

Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax is due to hit Japanese arcades this spring with demos available to play at the Japan Amusement Expo on February 14th and 15th at Makuhari Messe near Tokyo.

Merchandise: Mega Drive Megatron is Now a Thing

Sunday, February 9th, 2014

Takara Tomy have revealed the action figure to end all action figures in the form of the Transformer Megatron who can now transform into a Mega Drive!

The figure was revealed at the recent Winter Wonder Festival in Japan but without paintwork. Presumably the figure is due for a Japanese release but no word has been given as to when this will happen at this time. Fingers crossed the figure makes it to the West as well!
