News has broken that SEGA will re-release Sonic the Hedgehog on the 3DS eShop with added 3D support to show depth in the backgrounds. This news follows the release of 3D Space Harrier and 3D Super Hang-On, all of which are still Japan exclusive.
The re-release will launch on May 15th to mark the 25th anniversary of the Mega Drive in Japan and it will be priced 600 yen. Additional features include the already mentioned 3D effect, all the bug fixes and added details from the later revisions of Sonic 1 (rippling water, scrolling clouds), the addition of the spin attack, a classic view mode which simulates a CRT monitor and an option to choose a Mega Drive model 1 or 2 sound balance.
This re-release is unrelated to Christian Whitehead and Stealth’s port of Sonic the Hedgehog which runs using Whitehead’s custom Retro Engine and supports a widescreen display.
Take a look at some screenshots below:
No word on whether this version will make it to the West at this time.
The House of the Dead: Overkill – The Lost Reels is an episodic re-release of The House of the Dead: Overkill for iOS. The game is now available to download with the first 2 episodes being bundled together for £2.99 with the final episode being made available as an in-app purchase for £1.49.
Unfortunately, the dialogue between Agent G and Detective Washington has been removed despite the fact that the violence hasn’t been altered.
SEGA have uploaded the following teaser video which clearly hints at the heavily rumoured Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse re-release:
The trailer mentions a Summer 2013 release date but more interesting is that it uses all new assets like the previously leaked “box art”. Could this be a HD remake and not a simple re-release of the Mega Drive original?
Remember when the Brazilian ratings board outed the existence of a Castle of Illusion re-release? Well the game still hasn’t been officially announced but now we have the XBLA box art courtesy of Lifelower on Twitter.
Interestingly, the box art is completely new artwork which may suggest this is more than a simple re-release of the Mega Drive original. Could a true HD remaster be in the works?
Capcom action title Strider (which saw previous release on the Mega Drive as well as an unofficial sequel which was released on Mega Drive, Game Gear and Master System) is receiving a new entry.
The new title will launch on Xbox Live Arcade as revealed by artwork discovered by NeoGAF users that matches the dimensions of the box art and banners used on existing XBLA games.
Also uncovered was a Steam achievement which could also mean the game is planned for a PC release.
The game has not been officially announced so a PSN release can’t be ruled out yet. No other details have been discovered at this time. More on this as we get it.
Being a Japanese 3DS owner must be a wonderful thing because all these fantastic arcade classics keep getting re-released for your machine in shiny 3D!
Super Hang-On is making its’ way onto the Japanese 3DS eShop next week for ¥600 (roughly £4). You can even control the bike using the 3DS’ gyro-controls.
Here’s hoping this and 3D Space Harrier will make it to the West as well.
Game Gear RPG classic Crystal Warriors has been re-rated by the Australian Classification Board which means the game could well be due for a digital re-release.
No platforms have been announced but our money goes on a 3DS eShop release. More on this as we get it.
The sale appears to be North American only. Checks on the UK XBLA show the original prices are still live on this side of the pond.

NeoGAF user CrunchinJelly has spotted a listing by the Brazilian ratings board that lists Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse as an upcoming title for PS3, Xbox 360, PS Vita and Wii-U. We assume this title will be re-released digitally.
Castle of Illusion was originally released for Mega Drive in 1990 and is highly regarded as one of the best Mickey games ever made.
No release date is set at this time. More on this as we get it.
