Yakuza Of the End Coming to the West; Renamed Yakuza: Dead Souls

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

SEGA’s batty zombie Yakuza spin-off Yakuza: Of the End is coming to Western shores in March 2012 under the name of Yakuza: Dead Souls.

The only other difference (apart from the name) announced so far is the addition of a brand new Pachislot mini-game.

Toshihiro Nagoshi was quoted earlier saying that if Yakuza: Of the End came to the West, he would tweak the shooting mechanics to be more in line with modern 3rd person shooters that are typical to this side of the world. However, this has not been confirmed at this time.

The game will also be Playstation 3 exclusive like its’ Japanese counterpart.

EDIT

Full press release direct from SEGA:

LONDON AND SAN FRANCISCO (5th October, 2011) – SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announce that the much requested ‘Yakuza of the End’ will be available in the West from March 2012. Renamed ‘Yakuza: Dead Souls’ this iconic Japanese series will be available exclusively to PlayStation® 3 owners and will feature the entire storyline and a brand new mini-game Pachislot!

Yakuza: Dead Souls brings the Yakuza back to Kamurocho, the famous red light district of Tokyo, which is under attack from hordes of zombies. Players will not only face armies of the undead and incredibly powerful mutants; the treacherous Japanese underworld is just as merciless. Playing through the eyes of four of the most revered members of the series, witness allegiances shift quickly and the line between friend and foe lost. If you thought zombies were bad…meet the Yakuza!

“We know how much people love Yakuza in the West and with Dead Souls being the latest and greatest in the franchise its only right we bring it to them closer to the Japanese release than ever.”– said Gary Knight, Senior Vice President of Marketing at SEGA.

Yakuza: Dead Souls features gunplay for the first time in the Yakuza series, where everything from pistols, machine guns and rocket launchers can be employed against your enemies. Just remember to save some ammo in case you run into something more terrifying than zombies! With all the depth and story of a Yakuza title, plus the addition of exciting shoot-outs and previously unplayable characters Ryuji Goda and Goro Majima, Yakuza: Dead Souls is worth dying for.

Past Yakuza Games Unlikely To Appear on 360

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Toshihiro Nagoshi has stated that the Yakuza series will likely never get ported to the X-Box 360.

Nagoshi explains, “At the beginning of the project we spoke to all the platform holders including Sony and Microsoft. Every platform holder was negative about this prospect, but we kept on pushing because we believed in the potential, and as we kept going one platform holder that showed interest and saw the prospects of this title was Sony. That’s how we started working with them, and that’s probably not going to change.”

Nagoshi added, “The basic style and mechanics is really an old game that started on PS2 and continued on PS3. Times keep changing, and if we started on some new games they would be in a very different shape – so the last game was the end of one particular era.”

End of an era, eh? Can we expect more from the Yakuza series on different platforms? Only time will tell!
