SEGA Mega Drive Twin-Pad Player coming to the UK!

February 16th, 2009

Many of you may have seen the SEGA Mega Drive Twin-Pad Player from ATGames kicking around www.play-asia.com for a while. It’s a nifty piece of kit that comes with all the games featured on the portable player (see our review of the portable Mega Drive in our ‘Archive’) but adds a cartridge slot to play real Mega Drive games with. It also features a switch to allow the use of both Japanese and American NTSC games but it does not feature the ability to play PAL games.

Many reviewers have noted that the playback with real MD carts is very hit and miss with a lot of games not working at all and graphical issues with the game’s that do work.

However, we’ve just noticed that Blaze are going to release the SEGA Mega Drive Twin-Pad Player with full cartridge support for games from every region. They’ve cut the built-in games down to 15 but this is a new, licensed SEGA Mega Drive console that has no region lockout as standard. www.Play.com have the machine listed at £37.99 due for release on 24/04/2009.

Fingers crossed everyone; if this machine deals with all the compatibility issues that its’ Japanese brethren has, then we could be receiving the best Mega Drive ever released. Man, it rocks to be British 😉

New Games! (yay.)

February 12th, 2009

Today 2 new SEGA games have been announced.

Our first port of call is the new Alien Vs Predator game (yes, another Aliens game!) bring 2009’s SEGA/Alien count up to 3 games.

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (February 11, 2009) – SEGA of America Inc., SEGA Europe Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising (Fox L&M;) today reveals exciting new details of their increasing portfolio of upcoming games based on Twentieth Century Fox’s Aliens universe.

SEGA will publish an all-new Aliens vs. Predator (working title) game in early 2010. The game is currently in development with independent developer Rebellion, creators of the original 1999 Aliens versus Predator; a legendary title that went on to define an entire generation of multiplayer gaming.

With the opportunity to publish what promises to be a landmark game, SEGA has strategically updated the release of the other upcoming Aliens titles currently in development within its portfolio.

“The innovative new AvP game presents an exciting opportunity for us,” says CEO of SEGA West, Naoya Tsurumi, “It represents a fantastic addition to our growing Aliens franchise and the reinvention of one of gaming’s most cherished iconic titles. By adjusting the release of our other Aliens titles to accommodate it, SEGA will ensure that every title lives up to the high expectations of Aliens and AvP fans.”

“SEGA continues to create masterful games based on our Aliens franchise and this new addition is sure to continue their successful track record,” said Gary Rosenfeld, Senior Vice President, New Media for Fox L&M.;

The big news comes with the inevitable:

Following the 10 million selling Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games comes the Winter Olympics-based sequel which will most probably be hitting the shelves for Christmas.

I personally could see this one coming a mile off and feel it’s a bit unnecessary. This couldn’t be more of an attempt to make a load of dosh off the back of the last game which has been a consistent top seller for almost 2 years.

Its not that I feel the last game wasn’t good and isn’t deserving of its’ popularity, but treating the gaming public as a giant wallet isn’t cool so this needs to be something special. The Wii has enough mini-game titles to fill a disused mine so SEGA better pull a surprise out of the bag instead of just sticking in more characters like the inevitable Silver (he’s in SatBK now so you can obviously expect him in this).

Perhaps adding the ability to earn medals and new events through multiplayer would be the first improvement that could be implemented… hint-hint?

Either way, SEGADriven will now refer to anything SEGA/Nintendo/Olympics-related as this:

Urtheart just showed me this: http://brandokay.deviantart.com/art/Petey-and-Big-67109987. Maybe a fan game needs to happen?

Severe Retail Cock-Up: A Thousand Apologies

February 11th, 2009

I recently ordered a 10th Anniversary Sonic the Hedgehog boxset off a Japanese Ebay seller. It was a decent price and I was glad to finally have the opportunity to own it. The listing said it would come with the 10th anniversary coin, booklet and CD aswell as a copy of Sonic Adventure 2 (japanese, ooo!).

However, upon arrival I noticed I’d been given a Japanese copy of Sonic Adventure. This hasn’t bothered me much as I much prefer Sonic Adventure to its’ sequel but I thought I better tell the seller just in case this screwed up any of his other orders.

The message I received now follows:

“Hello
A thousand apologies, you are absolutely right, your game is here, was my mistake and I pray a thousand apologies a big mistake I apologize.
Missiles will play correctly on Sonic Adventure 1 may, a thousand apologies.
If you are interested in another Dreamcast game or something Japan can tell me to get it and if you like any of my articles now, I will contact me discounts.
A thousand apologies for the mistake.
Waiting for your kind reply me reiterate my apology dismissal”

Makes me wish I didn’t mention anything now! What a lovely bloke, I want to keep him 🙂

Dreamcast Review – V-Rally 2: Expert Edition

February 2nd, 2009

I love rally games. All the rules of rallysport make great arcade racers and V-Rally 2: Expert Edition is no different. V-Rally 2 is one of my favourite rally games and it should be a definate purchase for any Dreamcast owner. It’s far more accessable than SEGA Rally 2 with its’ brutal difficulty level and it has the best track creator to ever grace the gaming world.

Educate yourself! Get in the First Party Reviews section and read my new review for V-Rally 2 (ooo, that rhymes)!

SNOW DAY! Snowy stages in Sonic games

February 2nd, 2009

Hello to everyone who has been forced into their homes because of the mass amount of snow that has hit the UK today. In honour of our crazy weather I thought it would be a great opportunity to take a retrospective look at snow in Sonic games.

Snowy stages have been making regular appearances in Sonic games since Sonic 3. The zone in question is Ice Cap; a popular level among fans and its’ theme has become the most remixed Sonic song on OCRemix.org. The stage re-appeared with a different layout in Sonic Adventure. It also contains one of the coolest snowboarding sequences to ever grace a Sonic game.

Next on the list is Diamond Dust Zone from Sonic 3D. Despite the bashing that Sonic 3D gets for being too slow and including a silly gimmick like collecting flickies to progress, it’s a cool little game and features 2 of the best Sonic soundtracks available. My personal preference has to go to Jun Senoue for the Mega Drive soundtrack as Diamond Dust Zone was always my favourite tune from the game.

The PC release of Sonic R added weather to its’ graphical effects, making every trip to a stage a very unique one. I liked the addition of a cold, snow-based stage as it opened new shortcuts thanks to the lakes getting frozen.

My favourite snowy Sonic stage has to go to Robotnik Winter in Sonic Triple Trouble for including the greatest monitor to ever appear in a Sonic game; the snowboard monitor. Why this never made a comeback is beyond me but having the snowboard as an additional item instead of a gimmick was a genius inclusion by the developers.

The Sonic Advance series has always been a fan of winter madness and a snowy stage has appeared in each game of the series. Special mention has to go to Sonic Advance 3 for the most gimmick-heavy snow-stage in the history of Sonic games.

Even though the mention of Sonic the Hedgehog ’06 brings back horrible memories of pitfalls, bugs, cheap deaths and general unfinishedness, props have to go to White Acropolis for having one of the best tunes in the game. I absolutely love the 90s, dance vibe it brings to the stage.

Sonic Unleashed should be brilliant. It has all the right ideas but its just thrown them against a canvas and used whatever stuck. But when it works, it works well. The Holoska day stage is a perfect example of this. I love the nod to Ice Cap by using a bobsleigh section instead of a snowboard and the music (like the rest of the soundtrack) is sublime.

The sharp-eyed Sonic fan will have noticed that there are quite a few other snowy stages that we missed from this list. I was never going to list them all as this was more a personal reflection of memorable Sonic stages than a detailed list of every snowy stage.

How about you dive into your own personal collection and enjoy today’s wintery happenings in a more Sonic way? Have fun!

Take a look at Phantasy Star Portable

January 28th, 2009

I’ve talked about Phantasy Star Zero a while ago on the Nintendo DS, but there’s another handheld PS game on it’s way here from Japan. Phantasy Star Portable on the PSP looks to be as faithful a recreation of Universe on the go as can be, minus the online play I would imagine. SEGA UK have just released a video of the action, take a look.

Now personally, I’m looking forward more to Phantasy Star Zero, as I felt that PSU messed with the awesome formula of Phantasy Star Online a bit too much. That said, I’m pretty gutted that I have no real options to play it again on console – the Xbox servers are off, I don’t have a Gamecube anymore (thus no BB Adaptor) and I have no BB adaptor for my Dreamcast, thus making SCHTHACK unpossible. But, I have a PC. 🙂 Time to play that sucker once again. I may even head back to the non-online PSO’s and grind my character up. Man, I loved the Mines level for some weird reason.

Sega Rally Revo

January 19th, 2009

To kick off the addition of the Merchandise pages (Well the Seventh Generation only so far but give me a chance) and the empty Third Party Software pages, I have made a Review and added Merchandise information for Sega Rally (Aka Sega Rally Revo in other continents) on the XBox 360 and PS3.

Personally I would highly recommend the game. That may be because I am a massive fan of it, but it shocked me with how good it was. When I bought it, it was just a quick purchase, I thought it would be okay but nothing special and boy was I wrong. Check the review to find out why.
The Sega Rally review includes photographs of the boxart (May change these to scans in time) and in-game footage including imagery of the original 2 Sega Rally cars together and a picture each of the Sonic and Shadow skins used on two of the vehicles in-game.

As for Merchandise, you can expect to see a huge amount more covering alot more games as time goes on. The small amount of Sega Rally is just a start, the team at SegaDriven certainly have a vast amount more to share with you guys (In the sense of uploading images. Don’t touch my things tongue )
The Sega Rally Merchandise includes photos (May be changed to scans later) of the soundtrack’s inlay, booklet, cover and disc as well as photographs of the official Sega Rally T-shirt and Sega Rally Jacket (A professional Rally Jacket embossed with the Sega and Sega Rally logos).

I hope this gets you salivating for what’s to come. Now look at my geeky face. Ohhh yeaaa wink
