The latest Sonic mobile title is a 2D endless runner, similar in scope to Pac-Man Dash and Rayman: Jungle Run. Sonic automatically runs through a Windy Hill-styled stage and you have to tap the screen to make him jump. That’s all there is to it.
This is a bit of a self-indulgent little piece but I felt compelled to write something about my history with the Sonic franchise as it’s the hedgehog’s 24th anniversary today.
If you’ve ever wondered about the history of SEGADriven and our “place” in the Sonic community then this should answer any questions you may have! It also acts as a personal celebration of the Sonic franchise and a “thank you” for allowing all of the experiences that have come with it.
The worldwide launch date for Sonic Runners has finally been confirmed!
The iOS and Android downloadable endless-runner from Sonic Team will launch worldwide on June the 25th. The game had previously only been available in Canada and Japan from February this year.
Sonic Runners is free-to-play (AKA free-to-download with in-game microtransactions).
SEGA have revealed a new Sonic Boom game to be released later this year exclusively on 3DS. Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice is a sequel to Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal and developed once again by Sanzaru Games. You can view the announcement trailer below:
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal were the worst selling Sonic games in the history of the franchise. I can only assume the reason for this follow-up is because SEGA has invested a lot in the cartoon and all the merchandising off-shoots that have followed. In all honesty I’m glad we’re getting a sequel to Shattered Crystal as it was the most playable of the two original Sonic Boom games. I would’ve preferred Streets of Rage 4 though.
Those Sonic cameos just keep coming! Nintendo have revealed a new Mii outfit for Mario Kart 8 custom characters. The new outfit allows you to dress up your Mii in Sonic racing leathers and use a Sonic helmet. Interestingly the helmet looks quite similar to the Sonic masks you can buy in Toys ‘r’ Us:
This outfit will be available for Mario Kart 8 with the DLC update that goes live on April 23rd.
The first teaser for Sonic Runners has been unleashed! The new teaser trailer doesn’t show any gameplay but it does take a short tour of Sonic’s history which is becoming quite a familiar sight if you’re used to Sonic reveal trailers. Check it out below:
If you click the image above you will also see the first insight into the game’s graphical style which seems to be based off Sonic Lost World. Characters also have that chunky, black outline with games like Sonic Jump have adopted.
Sonic Runners will launch on smartphones in Spring 2015. It is still unclear whether this is a Japan exclusive title.
