The Sonic Amateur Games Expo returns on September the 27th 2019. This long running Sonic fan game event has often been the key event in the Sonic fan gaming calendar, so if Sonic fan gaming is your thing then be sure to mark September 27th to October 4th in your calendar.
Submissions for the event aren’t currently open, but the announcement trailer does mention that further details will come directly from the official SAGE Twitter account which you can access by clicking here.

Coffee Crisis developers Mega Cat Studios are back with a new Mega Drive title called Phantom Gear. This action title has a similar look and feel to something like Pulseman or Mega Man X and it is now seeking Kickstarter funding.
Multiple tiers are available with the option to buy the game’s ROM file for use with flash carts, or the cartridge on its own, or a completely boxed product. Click here to go directly to the Kickstarter and see which tier best suits your needs.

Developed by Neko800 and released by KunuKunu777, Left Right Up Down You and Me is a brand new homebrew release for the Mega Drive that has very clear ties to classic arcade titles like Rainbow Islands in both aesthetics and gameplay. Japanese publisher Columbus Circle is releasing a new Mega Drive game called Rhythm Land. The title kind of gives it away, but this is a rhythm game in the Rhythm Heaven mould that features varied environments to interact with, all to the rhythm of a song. The soundtrack even features music from Yuzo Koshiro. Check out the trailer below which also features footage of the 8 bit version of Rhythm Land which is available for Famicom:
The game is due to release on the 15th of February 2019 and can be pre-ordered now through Amazon Japan for ￥6458 (roughly £45 at time of writing).
Developed by Nendo, Omega Blast is a vertical ‘bullet hell’ shoot-em-up for the Mega Drive and a near complete version of the game is now available as part of the 30th anniversary of the Japanese launch of the Mega Drive.
This homebrew title is a free download and can be played in a Mega Drive emulator or directly on a Mega Drive itself with use of a flash cart. It’s a very impressive-looking title that reminds us of the infamous NES bullet hell shmup Summer Carnival ’92: Recca. You can see the game in action below:
It’s the 30th anniversary of the Mega Drive, and what better way to celebrate than by playing a brand new Mega Drive game!
Developed by Dr. Ludos, 30 Years of Nintendon’t sees you trying to convince NES owners to buy a Mega Drive instead of a SNES by tempting them with more attractive, Mega Drive-exclusive games. It’s a silly little concept that makes for a fun distraction. You can play it in browser via the game’s Itch page, or alternatively you can download the ROM for use on an actual Mega Drive if you have a flash cart to load it onto.
There are also future plans to release the game on an actual Mega Drive cartridge through Catskull Games. If you’ve got some time to kill and you’re nostalgic for the days when SEGA were a market leader, then why not give 30 Years of Nintendon’t a try?
Tanglewood is a brand new Mega Drive game that you can buy and purchase in the year of our Lord, 2018. A lot has been said of its development in 68000 assembly language and using an actual Mega Drive development kit. It’s certainly one of the more interesting Mega Drive homebrew developments in recent years, but for all its authenticity to developments of the time, is it any good?
Intrepid Izzy is a new Dreamcast action platformer from Senile Team; famed creators of Rush Rush Rally Racing and Beats of Rage. The game is currently in development and is seeking funding via the Kickstarter platform. At the time of writing the game is 40% funded with 17 days to go. If you’re interested in supporting a new Dreamcast project then you can visit the game’s Kickstarter page and pledge now. The Dreamcast tier will set you back 30 euros which is a great price for a brand new, physical Dreamcast game. In conjuction with the Dreamcast release, the game will also be released on PC and PS4.
