Friday, September 13th, 2019

A new Japan-only compilation of early Virtual-On titles is coming to PS4 on November 27th 2019 as Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Masterpiece 1995-2001. This collection will be a download-only affair and include the following titles:

– Cyber Troopers Virtual-On
– Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram

SEGA Japan are working with TANITA to bring this collection to PS4 alongside a new twin-stick controller for Virtual-On purists. This twin-stick controller was funded by Kickstarter back in January 2019.

A Certain Magical Virtual On for PS4/Vita Being Delisted… Tomorrow

Wednesday, March 20th, 2019

It’s not a good month for SEGA games and delistings – first Judgement was the subject of of a huge drugs scandal that’s taken it off shelves, and now the bizarre Japan-only Index vs Virtual On crossover title A Certain Magical Virtual On is being delisted from both physical and digital sale too.

No reason has been given for the removal, but it’s likely down to the license agreement with Dengeki running out. There’s nothing to suggest this affects Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax: Ignition, thankfully, but if you’re itching for some new Virtual On action today’s your last chance to grab it. Currently a PS4 copy of the game will set you back about £40 with shipping from Amazon.JP, and if you’re on Vita it’s only £30 – so it might be worth jumping on it before prices start to rise (as is becoming the case with Judgement).

SEGA has referred to the delisting as “temporary”, but given the difficulty of licenses and the fact the game apparently didn’t do so well sales-wise, it’s looking too likely that it’ll be back in the short term. The upside is Virtual On fans still have ports of 3 of the games most loved entries on the way to PS4 with support for an all-new Twin Stick peripheral to boot, but losing games like this to the void of licensing is always a shame.

Three Classic Virtual On Titles are coming to Playstation 4, as TANITA launch crowdfunding for PS4 Twin Stick Controller

Thursday, October 18th, 2018

Surprise! Hardware company TANITA have announced a crowdfunding drive to produce Virtual On twin stick controllers for PS4.

Actually, this isn’t much of a shock, as they’ve already tried it once before, with a project that fell far short of its goal. This time they’re aiming to produce fewer sticks (at a lower specification), and as such the goal of the crowdfunding is dramatically lower than the previous attempt. The crowdfunding page is available here, with a goal of 4.4 million JPY.

According to d2item store, there’s only one Virtual On game currently on Playstation 4 with which to use the controller, A Certain Magical Virtual-On. But that won’t be the case for long – alongside the crowdfunding announcement, it’s also been revealed that Cyber Troopers Virtual-On, Virtual On Oratorio Tangram ver 5.66, and Cyber Troopers Virtual On FORCE are all coming to PS4! Presumably, they’ll be compatible with TANITA’s new controller. It’s a real surprise announcement, and very welcome – particularly as FORCE has been stuck on Japanese Xbox 360s as an exclusive for years now.

(With thanks to BlackKite on Twitter for the heads up!)
