SEGA Mega Drive Twin-Pad Player coming to the UK!

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Many of you may have seen the SEGA Mega Drive Twin-Pad Player from ATGames kicking around www.play-asia.com for a while. It’s a nifty piece of kit that comes with all the games featured on the portable player (see our review of the portable Mega Drive in our ‘Archive’) but adds a cartridge slot to play real Mega Drive games with. It also features a switch to allow the use of both Japanese and American NTSC games but it does not feature the ability to play PAL games.

Many reviewers have noted that the playback with real MD carts is very hit and miss with a lot of games not working at all and graphical issues with the game’s that do work.

However, we’ve just noticed that Blaze are going to release the SEGA Mega Drive Twin-Pad Player with full cartridge support for games from every region. They’ve cut the built-in games down to 15 but this is a new, licensed SEGA Mega Drive console that has no region lockout as standard. www.Play.com have the machine listed at £37.99 due for release on 24/04/2009.

Fingers crossed everyone; if this machine deals with all the compatibility issues that its’ Japanese brethren has, then we could be receiving the best Mega Drive ever released. Man, it rocks to be British 😉

New Games! (yay.)

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Today 2 new SEGA games have been announced.

Our first port of call is the new Alien Vs Predator game (yes, another Aliens game!) bring 2009’s SEGA/Alien count up to 3 games.

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (February 11, 2009) – SEGA of America Inc., SEGA Europe Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising (Fox L&M;) today reveals exciting new details of their increasing portfolio of upcoming games based on Twentieth Century Fox’s Aliens universe.

SEGA will publish an all-new Aliens vs. Predator (working title) game in early 2010. The game is currently in development with independent developer Rebellion, creators of the original 1999 Aliens versus Predator; a legendary title that went on to define an entire generation of multiplayer gaming.

With the opportunity to publish what promises to be a landmark game, SEGA has strategically updated the release of the other upcoming Aliens titles currently in development within its portfolio.

“The innovative new AvP game presents an exciting opportunity for us,” says CEO of SEGA West, Naoya Tsurumi, “It represents a fantastic addition to our growing Aliens franchise and the reinvention of one of gaming’s most cherished iconic titles. By adjusting the release of our other Aliens titles to accommodate it, SEGA will ensure that every title lives up to the high expectations of Aliens and AvP fans.”

“SEGA continues to create masterful games based on our Aliens franchise and this new addition is sure to continue their successful track record,” said Gary Rosenfeld, Senior Vice President, New Media for Fox L&M.;

The big news comes with the inevitable:

Following the 10 million selling Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games comes the Winter Olympics-based sequel which will most probably be hitting the shelves for Christmas.

I personally could see this one coming a mile off and feel it’s a bit unnecessary. This couldn’t be more of an attempt to make a load of dosh off the back of the last game which has been a consistent top seller for almost 2 years.

Its not that I feel the last game wasn’t good and isn’t deserving of its’ popularity, but treating the gaming public as a giant wallet isn’t cool so this needs to be something special. The Wii has enough mini-game titles to fill a disused mine so SEGA better pull a surprise out of the bag instead of just sticking in more characters like the inevitable Silver (he’s in SatBK now so you can obviously expect him in this).

Perhaps adding the ability to earn medals and new events through multiplayer would be the first improvement that could be implemented… hint-hint?

Either way, SEGADriven will now refer to anything SEGA/Nintendo/Olympics-related as this:

Urtheart just showed me this: http://brandokay.deviantart.com/art/Petey-and-Big-67109987. Maybe a fan game needs to happen?

See the press release after the break as this update has been way too long 😉

The Hardware pages for the Second and Third Generation have been updated to tell you the new stuff to be added soon. I better get back to work, enjoy the content.

Last chance to buy a Sega SC-3000H Brand New!

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Using the link below, you can purchase a brand new Sega SC-3000H from Australia. I bought one myself (To also help add info to this site) and it cost less than £50 including postage and packing to England!

If you’re really into SEGA, and want some cheap but extremely rare (These are exceptionally hard to come by) retro goodness, you really can’t go wrong with this. It’s a second generation computer system based on the SG-1000 console. The H series has an upgraded keyboard and increased RAM over the standard SC-3000. It takes SG-1000 cartridges, and can also be integrated with a Sega SF-7000 floppy disk desktop add-on.

The Yeno on the machine and in the box is the distribution company of the PAL model, however you can see on the machine itself that it still has “Manufactured by SEGA” on the right hand side of the machine. Yeno made no modifications to the machine itself, just slapped it’s name on there.

More information will be updated in the Second Generation Sega Hardware section soon (I have yet to recieve mine as I had it shipped via seamail) along with photos of it in High Definition and an opinion/Review of the machine. Hard to find Sega consoles from before the Master System, especially at such a low price. Get in there before the bargain is over.
