The Simpsons: Bart VS The Space Mutants Review

WARNING: This feature is scheduled for a re-review.

Back in the day of Mega Drive gaming, it was a fairly new thing for television and movie companies to give a video game company their license to create a video game using it. It was also very difficult to make a bad game unlike the awful movie-to-game-conversions we get nowadays. But when The Simpsons decided it would be a good idea to get Flying Edge to make their game they made a big mistake.

The idea of this game is another strange one. You play as Bart, who is the only character able to see the space mutants invading Springfield thanks to his X-Ray specs. Using his spray can, Bart must spray all the purple objects red in order to get rid of the space mutants. I still don’t understand how doing that would solve anything but amazingly it does. Here’s a lesson kids; space mutants invading your town? Simply paint every purple object red and the problem is solved!

The main problem with Bart Vs. The Space Mutants is that it lacks everything. Graphically, Flying Edge have attempted to replicate the cartoon-ish look of the original Simpsons cartoon but have ended up using a very limited colour palette which makes the game look no better than a Master System title.

If it isn’t bad enough playing a game that looks like an 8 bit game, the next problem you’ll encounter is the fact that you really can’t play it. To play Bart Vs. The Space Mutants you need the patience of a saint because the game is so frustratingly difficult to play you’ll end up pulling your own hair out in a matter of minutes.

To be honest, I’ve never completed the first level and I’m currently reviewing the game on that basis. But if you really want to give this steaming pile of filth a try (maybe you’re a Simpsons fan, I don’t know) then give it a shot and attempt to complete the first level. If that doesn’t put you off enough then you simply have a bad taste in games and the fact you like the Simpsons that much to play this terrible excuse for a game is just wrong. That isn’t my opinion, it’s the truth.
