SEGA Arcade Pop-Up History | Review

Tuesday, February 25th, 2020

SEGA Arcade Pop-Up History is a wonderful idea in concept. What long-standing SEGA fan doesn’t want a book full of pop-up, cardboard models of some of SEGA’s most iconic, deluxe, arcade cabinets? That’s such a goofy and charming little concept that we instantly jumped on board as soon as this was announced on Kickstarter. But after pawing through the finished product, it often feels like the concept was far better than the end result.

UPDATE: New Information Released for SEGA AGES: Space Harrier, Including Koma-Inu Barrier Mode

Thursday, June 20th, 2019

UPDATE 24/06/19 – SEGA AGES Space Harrier will launch June 27th 2019, M2 has confirmed. Due to timezones this means it should arrive around 4pm UK time on Wednesday 26th.

SEGA has released some fresh details on what to expect from SEGA AGES: Space Harrier for Nintendo Switch, suggesting it might be the next title in the line to release.

The port includes the 3DS version’s bonus content, such as Haya-Oh from the Master System port as a secret boss fight. There’s also a new mode, in line with the other difficulty-mitigating features of other AGES releases – Koma-Inu Barrier. This gives Harrier a barrier that allows him to collide with enemies and obstacles, formed by the dogs that usually help the boss of Stage 17.

Yes, this game has puppy helpers. Yes, this is probably the best version of Space Harrier ever.

It’s been noted by some that this is actually somewhat similar to a feature in the PS2 remake of Space Harrier, so much like how 3D After Burner II had a mode styled after Climax, it’s cool to see an idea backported to the original arcade hardware.

There’s still no release date for the port, but we’ll let you know when one shows up.

Several SEGA Soundtracks Seemingly Sliced from Spotify

Tuesday, May 15th, 2018

Some unfortunate news for the musically inclined – several SEGA OSTs that were previously available for streaming on Spotify have suddenly vanished from the service.

SEGA doesn’t appear to have mentioned the removals on any social media accounts or statements, making the removals rather mysterious. It’s a pretty sizeable set of removals too; the affected soundtracks include:

  • Alex Kidd
  • Alexandria Bloodshow
  • Chain Chronicle
  • Fantasy Zone
  • Galaxy Force II/Thunder Blade
  • NiGHTS into dreams
  • Out Run
  • Power Drift
  • Rhythm Thief
  • Samurai Bloodshow
  • Skies Of Arcadia
  • Space Harrier Complete Collection
  • Super Hang-On
  • Virtua Fighter 1 – 5
  • WORLD CLUB Champion Football

It’s very unfortunate to see, particularly with SEGA PR previously stating they were looking into adding newer SEGA soundtracks to the service. Interestingly however, some of the titles appear to have changed into Japanese characters – suggesting perhaps the albums have been restricted to Japan.

We’ll let you know if the removals are reversed, or should a statement crop up. In the mean time, it’s back to the CDs for us.

[With thanks to @CorBond for compiling the list of removed tracks, as well as further investigating the extent of the removals]

SEGA Mega Drive Classics to Release on Xbox One, PC and PS4 May 29th 2018

Wednesday, March 14th, 2018

UPDATE 2

The full list of included games has been confirmed by the PlayStation Blog. Notable exclusions from the collection include Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles which is likely due to licensing agreements regarding the soundtrack, which infamously features work by Michael Jackson. We also have confirmation of both offline and online multiplayer for games that support multiplayer options.

UPDATE 1

SEGA Europe have confirmed that the game will feature a new rewind option, a mirror mode and a selection of visual filters. SEGA Europe have confirmed the mirror mode mirrors the entire game horizontally – text and all. There has also been confirmation that Sonic 3 will not be included. The game will support trophies and achievements. An official website is also now live.

ORIGINAL POST

A new SEGA Mega Drive Classics collection will launch for PS4, Xbox One and PC on May 29th 2018.

This new collection appears to be based on the engine powering the SEGA Mega Drive Classics Hub for PC (complete with the virtual gamer’s bedroom), which is bizarre considering this is supposed to be getting a PC port as well. Will it become an update to owners of the SEGA Mega Drive Classics Hub on PC or will SEGA de-list the hub? We will update this story as we learn more.

This collection will feature over 50 Mega Drive titles including Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Space Harrier II, Gunstar Heroes, ToeJam & Earl, The Revenge of Shinobi, Kid Chameleon and Altered Beast.

Check out the reveal trailer below:
