SEGA Suing THQ Over Company of Heroes Pre-Orders

Wednesday, July 10th, 2013

There were 20,755 pre-orders for Company of Heroes 2 registered through Steam from September 2012 to 24th January 2013. This generated revenue of $1,345,301.29 with Valve taking a 30% cut of those sales. This left THQ and Relic Entertainment with 70% which amounts to around $941,000.

So I Guess SEGA Don’t Own the Warhammer 40K License

Friday, March 15th, 2013

In a bizarre sequence of events, Games Workshop have announced a partnership with Slitherine who will create a new Warhammer 40K game.

SEGA’s acquisition of Relic Entertainment appears to mean that the publisher has not acquired its’ IPs outside of Company of Heroes 2.

But at the moment this is still speculation. SEGA may well own the Dawn of War license but it’s a strange move that Games Workshop would want two developers working on 40K games.

More on this as we get it.

SEGA to Release Company of Heroes 2; Releases June

Sunday, March 10th, 2013

After SEGA’s acquisition of Relic Entertainment, it appears they’ve taken their in-development project Company of Heroes 2. SEGA will now release the game in North America and Europe on June 25th for PC. Full press release below:

“We are proud to announce that Company of Heroes 2, the eagerly anticipated strategy game from newly acquired Relic Entertainment, is scheduled for release on June 25th, 2013 in North America and Europe!

Originally slated for release in early 2013, Relic is using the additional time to help Company of Heroes 2 meet the high standard set by its predecessor, the highest rated strategy game of all time. Underpinned by the cutting-edge Essence 3.0 Engine, Company of Heroes 2 brings tactical strategy to life like never before, thanks to the realistic ColdTech weather system, the revolutionary dynamic line of sight system, TrueSight and realistic destructibility.

Jonathan Dowdeswell, Executive Producer of Company of Heroes 2, had this to say in regards to the new ship date. “Our acquisition by SEGA has given us the chance to work with a new partner that has a great track record of working with long standing PC franchises. It gives us great confidence to know that we have a well aligned team working to bring the best experience we can to gamers around the world.”

“We hate to disappoint our fans with a later than expected date as we know they are eager to play but we feel that the additional time will help the team deliver the high quality sequel they deserve,” said Greg Wilson, Producer of Company of Heroes 2. “However, the wait won’t be long as players will soon be able to help us test and balance multiplayer in the upcoming Closed Beta. Details will follow shortly.”

Toshihiro Nagoshi Discusses SEGA’s Future, PSO2 and Relic Entertainment

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

Yakuza director and chief creative officer of SEGA Toshihiro Nagoshi has sat down for a fascinating interview with Famitsu to discuss SEGA’s future, the success of Phantasy Star Online 2’s Japanese launch and the company’s purchase of Relic Entertainment.

Key points include:

– Regarding SEGA’s future; “To be honest, we still need to solidify our footing and our performance as a company, but given the frenetic cycles we deal with nowadays, if we worried solely about that right now, we wouldn’t have a stable future in three or five years.”
– Regarding the success of PSO2’s Japanese launch; “I think it comes down to the talents of the PSO2 team, and how they convinced the company to go that way. I see possibilities with F2P across the industry; it all depends on what you do with it, but it took this team to show us what we could accomplish with this property.”
– Regarding the purchase of Relic Entertainment; “Sega already has The Creative Assembly, which is great at making RTS’, and so we’re becoming one of the best in the world at this genre now. So this purchase was part of our strategy for tackling this genre as well.”

Relic Entertainment Now Owned by SEGA; Platinum Games Interested in Buying Darksiders

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

SEGA has successfully won Relic Entertainment (developers of Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War and Space Marine) meaning it now has control of both the Warhammer license and Warhammer 40K license. SEGA paid a whopping $26.6 million.

In other news, Platinum Games has shown an interest in buying the Vigil studio who own the rights to the Darksiders franchise. This is an interesting move in that Platinum Games’ Bayonetta was released the same week as the original Darksiders.

Platinum Games head honcho Atsushi Inaba tweeted: “In THQ studio and IP selling off auction, Darksiders is unsold? [We] wanna buy it…on the cheap…”

The Vigil studio was not put up for auction with the other THQ franchises which could mean that Platinum Games make a deal with THQ out of auction for the lower price that Inaba-san is talking about.
