Game Gear Micro to Launch in Japan October 2020

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2020

For SEGA’s 60th anniversary, the company have revealed a new novelty micro console in the form of the Game Gear Micro.

Currently only scheduled for a Japanese launch on October 6th 2020, the console will be available in 4 colour variants, each bundled with its own compilation of 4 Game Gear titles. Each system will launch for ¥4,980. A special edition bundle is also available which includes all 4 console variants, a set of replica game cases for each of the included titles and a working SEGA Big Window (aka the Super Wide Gear) which allows you to magnify the screen. This will set you back ¥29,980.

The Game Gear Micro will measure 80mm wide, 43mm tall and 20mm deep and include a 1.15″ display. It also includes a single mono speaker, a headphone jack and is powered by 2 AAA batteries. Supposedly you can power the system for a longer period of time with a separately sold USB cable.

The full list of included titles on each of the Game Gear Micro variants now follows:

Black Game Gear Micro
Out Run, Puyo Puyo Tsu, Royal Stone and Sonic the Hedgehog

Blue Game Gear Micro

Japanese Mega Drive RPG Madō Monogatari I Receives English Language Patch

Saturday, February 15th, 2020

The Madō Monogatari series has long been a Japanese exclusive franchise, but that changes today as the Mega Drive remake of the first 3 games is now available in English for the very first time.

Western gamers will recognise the characters of Madō Monogatari from their later appearances in the Puyo Puyo franchise, but they actually debuted here. The action of Madō Monogatari is largely a traditional JRPG which is why an English language patch is so essential to play it. With this patch the game becomes Sorcery Saga I in English.

If you would like to try Madō Monogatari I in English then the patch can be downloaded now from Romhacking.net. You will need a copy of the original Madō Monogatari ROM file and you can apply the English language patch using Romhacking.net’s online ROM patching utility.

SEGA AGES Virtua Racing & Wonder Boy in Monster Land Come West June 27th

Thursday, June 6th, 2019

SEGA has finally announced when Western players will be able to get their hands on the SEGA AGES series’ Virtua Racing and Wonder Boy ports for Nintendo Switch. The titles will both be out June 27th in the West, for $7.99 each. If the other AGES titles are to go by, they’ll likely be £5.99 each on the European eShop.

This is where things get puzzling though – Western players are now missing a game! SEGA AGES Puyo Puyo, which launched in Japan before either of these titles and was previously confirmed to be on the way to Western shores, is nowhere to be found. It’s a very peculiar turn of events, as the game is fully localised (downloading it from the Japan store to an English system gives you the localised version, as with all of the AGES ports). All we can think of is that perhaps they didn’t want to launch the port so close to the recent Puyo Puyo Champions, but it’s unfortunate given AGES Puyo marks the first time the game’s English translation has ever been officially rereleased.

Either way, it’s good to see more titles from this series making their way westward, and Virtua Racing in particular is a fantastic port. We’ll let you know if anymore details come in on Puyo’s whereabouts.

SEGA AGES: Puyo Puyo Launches March 28th in Japan

Monday, March 25th, 2019

After a hefty delay, SEGA has confirmed the Nintendo Switch port of Puyo Puyo’s original arcade version, part of M2’s SEGA AGES series, will launch on March 28th in Japan.

As well as including the original Japanese arcade version of the game, for the first time ever the AGES release will include the English localisation of the title, previously speculated to be a bootleg. It’s… an interesting take on the game, to say the least. Above all else, the game also supports online play, so you can have those Mean Bean Machine matches with foes half the world away!

There’s no word on a Western release date yet but fortunately SEGA’s Western divisions are catching up, as both Gain Ground and Alex Kidd in Miracle World, the most recent games in the AGES series, will be released over here on the same day Puyo hits Japan, March 28th.

You can check out the official SEGA AGES Puyo page here.

Mega Drive Mini Will Have One Game Per Series, Voting For Sonic, Puyo and Shining Game Open

Monday, February 25th, 2019

SEGA has confirmed that the Mega Drive Mini is currently planned to have one game per series – so don’t expect every Sonic game to be on there, as with most Mega Drive collections. The possibility was floated at SEGA Fes 2018 when the console was announced, but this is a more solid confirmation of the plan.

As a result of this, SEGA has decided to open up some of the game choice to the fans – asking them which game from the Sonic the Hedgehog, Puyo Puyo and Shining series should appear on the console. The options are:

Sonic the Hedgehog vs Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Puyo Puyo vs Puyo Puyo Tsu

Shining Force vs Shining Force II

The poll is available as a Twitter thread and on the Mega Drive Mini website. It’s worth mentioning also that something like Puyo’s choice may not matter for us in the West, as the system is planned to have different games per region – so we’ll probably get Puyo Puyo in the guise of Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine regardless.

SEGA AGES Gain Ground and SEGA AGES Puyo Puyo Launching in the West in Feburary

Thursday, January 10th, 2019

In a bit of a twist, SEGA America has not only confirmed that the Nintendo Switch SEGA AGES port of Gain Ground is coming west next month, but that SEGA AGES Puyo Puyo will also be launching in February too!

This is a surprise, as SEGA Japan hadn’t actually confirmed what the next title coming to the series was going to be – this is the first time SEGA America have beaten them to the punch. Given the delay in releasing the other titles, this might suggest Puyo Puyo will be dropping on the Japanese eShop later this month or earlier in February, but we’ll keep an eye out for concrete confirmation.

Gain Ground contains both the 2 player and 3 player versions of the game, and the 2 player version offers additional features such as “All-Member Mode” and other functions to mitigate the game’s brutal difficulty. Puyo Puyo has several new features, which were detailed just the other day.

We’ll update back when any concrete details get revealed. The press release also reconfirms titles such as Sonic 2, Puyo Puyo Tsu and Space Harrier for the first wave of titles, which will continue to launch throughout 2019.

SEGA AGES Puyo Puyo and Puyo Puyo Tsu Get New Screenshots, New Features Detailed

Monday, January 7th, 2019

The official website for M2’s SEGA AGES series for Nintendo Switch has updated, and with it we have some more detail on what to expect from the upcoming ports of Puyo Puyo and Puyo Puyo Tsu in the series.

This moreso goes for the first game – currently the only additional feature listed for Puyo Puyo Tsu is the previously confirmed online play, with not even the 3DS tournament mode being confirmed.

The original Puyo, however, is getting quite a few touch ups to bring the arcade version in line with several of the home ports and beyond. In particular, the SEGA AGES version allows you to rotate pieces both left and right (the original arcade version of the game locks rotation to one direction) and also adds in the Quick Turn mechanic from Puyo Tsu (which allows you to rotate Puyos even if you’re stuck between two walls).

New screenshots, showing off the snazzy wallpaper borders included in the ports, are also available on the SEGA AGES pages for each game. Check out Puyo Puyo’s here and Puyo Puyo Tsu’s here.

There’s still no word on a release date for these titles, nor confirmation of a Western release, but we’ll keep an eye out if that changes.

Puyo Puyo and Puyo Puyo Tsu announced for SEGA AGES on Nintendo Switch

Sunday, December 16th, 2018

A double-whammy of Puyo Puyo goodness is heading to Switch, as a Puyo Puyo Championship stream has confirmed that both Puyo Puyo and the beloved Puyo Puyo Tsu will be heading to the console as part of M2’s SEGA AGES series of re-releases.

Currently all that is known about the releases is that they’ll be based on the original arcade versions of the titles, and crucially that they’ll have support for online battles. It can also be assumed that Puyo Tsu will retain its new Tournament Mode from the Japan-only 3DS eShop release of the game.

We’ll let you know if any more details come out regarding these titles, particularly in terms of a Western release. With M2 admitting many aspects of AGES are being tailored towards the Western market, could this be our shot at officially translated versions of these titles? Time will tell.

Puyo Puyo Series Producer Mizuki Hosoyamada teases “new information” at Tokyo Game Show 2018

Tuesday, August 21st, 2018

Puyo Puyo series producer Mizuki Hosoyamada has recently tweeted in response to a Puyo eSports competition being held at TGS 2018 – but in the tweet, after encouraging support of the players he also teases the possibility of “new information” being revealed there.

It has been a fair while since the last Puyo game, Puyo Puyo Chronicles (which released in 2016) – and in terms of a more mainline Puyo title, technically the last was Puyo Puyo Tetris, which originally released in 2014. However equally possible is that this new information may just be related to the Puyo mobile title Puyo Puyo Quest, which still enjoys a fair amount of success (and at the time of writing is in the middle of an Neon Genesis Evangelion themed event).

Time will tell what comes of this hint, but fingers crossed – and whatever’s next, let’s hope it’s fair and balanced.
