Bubsy and Accolade Return with Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back for PC and PS4

Thursday, June 8th, 2017

Bubsy-PS4-PC-Ann_06-08-17

Okay so Bubsy is not a SEGA property but the original 2 games did appear on the Mega Drive and publisher Accolade are intrinsically connected with a big part of SEGA history (click here to read more), so we have to let you know that Accolade are back and they’re publishing a brand new Bubsy title called Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back. Yes, really.

Developed by Black Forest Games who are responsible for the rather good Giana: Twisted Dreams, Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back is clearing riffing on the first two Bubsy titles and offers a 2.5D aesthetic, a whole host of yarn-based gimmicks and a snarky attitude to boot.

Check out the announcement trailer by clicking below:

Review: The Golden Compass on Xbox 360

Thursday, June 1st, 2017

compass02 001

There’s something morbidly fascinating about SEGA’s late 2000s movie tie-in games. There’s so many of them and they’re all outsourced to little studios who were probably given an extremely tight deadline to work towards and the results are telling. Why on Earth SEGA commissioned a game based on 2007’s underperforming The Golden Compass (currently rocking a 43% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an opening weekend described by New Line Cinema as “a little disappointing”) is a mystery to me, but I imagine it’s probably down to being a family orientated movie with an insane amount of fantasy gimmicks that can be utilised for a video game.

Review: Earthworm Jim 2 for Mega Drive

Monday, February 20th, 2017

ewj2cover

The original Earthworm Jim is a zany, off-the-wall, run ‘n’ gun, cartoon platformer that has earned its place as one of the Mega Drive’s greatest games. A sequel seemed inevitable at the time, but in hindsight, was there really anything that the Earthworm Jim formula needed to improve on?

Sonic Boom Fire & Ice Release Delayed Until 2016

Tuesday, September 15th, 2015

sonicboomfire

In what has to be a first for the Sonic franchise, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice will be delayed until 2016 so the game can be improved and fine-polished. There is currently no exact release date in 2016 other than, “it’ll be ready when it’s ready”.

The Sonic franchise is not well known for delays and generally when a release date is set for a game then it gets delivered in whatever state it’s in at the time. This has resulted in some pretty lackluster efforts like Sonic the Hedgehog ’06 and even last year’s Sonic Boom games Rise of Lyric and Shattered Crystal.

Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice was due to release on 3DS in quarter four this year and this delay marks one of the few occasions I feel a delay can really benefit a game. The Sonic franchise deserves more great entries and rush-releasing games has never been good practice for the blue blur. Fingers crossed Fire & Ice turns into a worthy entry in the franchise whenever it is that we next see it.

Review: World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck

Monday, February 2nd, 2015

worldofillusionlogo

1990’s Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse was an early hit for the Mega Drive. The SEGA-developed platformer was an excellent little game full of beautiful scenarios, smart level design and tight controls and it was gently dipped in that lovely, Disney goo that makes the experience all the more magical. A sequel was inevitable and the next two years saw Castle of Illusion making its way to Master System and Game Gear. An original sequel for the 8 bit consoles came in the form of Land of Illusion and then things came full circle with another Mega Drive game in the form of World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck (that title is quite a mouthful).
