Rise of the Robots Review


Rise of the Robots is a simple beat-em-up from Mirage games which sees you; a half android, half human go up against a selection of robots that have started a revolution. So I guess it’s up to you sort them out. A simple premise but that never stopped great games from being great.

Sadly, it does in this case. Rise of the Robots seems to be lacking in everything apart from graphics. All the time and effort the developers have put into this game seems to have been spent kicking as much graphical power they could out of the Mega Drive. Which is no bad thing, the game looks fantastic. It just so happens to have the best looking introduction sequence any Mega Drive game has. But the developers just seemed to have forgotten about everything else.

If we compare this to Street Fighter II you can see where I’m coming from. Where the SFII games have a large amount of playable characters, Rise of the Robots has one. Yes, you heard me; ONE. But that makes sense seeing as the character you play as is supposed to be standing up against the entire robot revolution so lets move on.

Gameplay really isn’t too bad. But that’s about it, it really isn’t anything special. There is no precision in Rise of the Robots. It doesn’t seem to matter if you’re using a heavy attack or a low attack to avoid high attacks from your enemy. The objective just seems to be move toward your enemy whether it’s by walking or jumping and then hammering any of the attack buttons to see whether you’ll win. That really is it to be honest.

Fare play to anyone who actually beats the game because you’ve probably completed a game which no-one else could be bothered with. Rise of the Robots is a very average beat-em-up that tries to impress with its’ visuals but just ends up disappointing you with its’ mediocre gameplay.
